He was born November 4, 1917 in Marion to the late Fred and Mary (Atha) Everly, but at the age of 12, due to the passing of his mother, he was adopted by Earnest and Elsie Welty of West Mansfield, they also preceded him in death.

Upon graduating from Meeker, Dwight married and began raising a family in western Marion County. Mr. and Mrs. Wenig renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary Aug. 10, 2002.
