Phyllis Meddles, 99, of Richwood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Bluebird Retirement Community in Marysville. Phyllis was born March 31, 1927, not in a hospital but in the home of her parents, Frank and Blanche (Temple) Marsh of Richwood. She arrived without medical assistance as did her two brothers, Guy Marsh and Bill (Marlene) Marsh, and her half-sister, Wilma (Gerald) Dysert. All of her siblings have preceded her in death. Phyllis grew up on a farm where she fed chickens, milked cows, cleaned soot from lanterns and plowed the corn which she particularly enjoyed. From an early age, she was taught the value of hard work. As she grew older, Phyllis especially looked forward to Friday evenings when she would ride her bicycle to the local general store in Jackson to visit with neighbors and friends. In her quieter moments, she loved to read with poetry holding a special place in her heart. An accomplished student, Phyllis was a cheerleader in high school and graduated as her senior class salutatorian. She dreamed of attending college and becoming a history teacher, but financial circumstances made that impossible. Her great Uncle Shan helped finance her brothers’ college educations but held the belief that a woman’s place was not in a college. Undeterred, Phyllis found a way to fund her own education and attended business school for a year. Phyllis met her future husband while she was in high school. She married Stanley R. Meddles on April 27, 1947, beginning a marriage that spanned 75 years. Early in their marriage, Stan and Phyllis spent a year in Chicago. Phyllis rode the “L” train each day into downtown Chicago where she worked on the 22nd floor of a high-rise. One experience made it clear that city life was quite different from her upbringing in Richwood. One day, while looking out over the river, she witnessed a marine patrol pulling a body from the water. It was certainly a memorable introduction to life in the big city. Upon returning to Ohio, Phyllis built a long and respected career in her hometown. She worked at Richwood Banking Company, served at the former First United Methodist Church, and ultimately became treasurer for the North Union Local School District. Family was always at the center of Phyllis’s life. She and Stan raised four children: Gary A. Meddles (Shari) of Marion; the late Richard A. Meddles; Karla S. Meddles Riedy (Mark) of Delaware; and Sue E. Meddles Browning (Dave) of West Mansfield. Retirement brought an unexpected new chapter. Stan explained to Phyllis that the only proper retirement was one that included golf. Although she had never set foot on a golf course, Phyllis reluctantly took up the game. What began as an unwanted goading onto the greens became a genuine love affair with golf. By the time her golfing days were over, she had accomplished something even many lifelong golfers never achieve: three holes-in-one, a feat in which she was quite pleased. Throughout her long life, Phyllis found joy in simple things and in serving others. She taught an adult Sunday school class most of her adult years. She sang in the church choir and played piano for the choir. She was a devoted member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 50 years. She and Stan enjoyed wintering in Lake Placid, Florida. She loved reading, playing Mah Jongg, working puzzles, and, most of all, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Phyllis will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but also for the gentle spirit with which she lived her life. She sought peace whenever possible, rarely complained, believed in serving her community, and was always willing to give back when she could. Her quiet strength, kindness, humility, and love for her family touched the lives of many. Phyllis will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held Thursday September 10, 2026 at 11:00 am at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood. Pastor Joseph Rhea will officiate. Burial will follow in the Claibourne Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5-7 pm at the funeral home in Richwood. Memorial contributions may be made to Bluebird Retirement Community Center of Marysville or ViaQuest Hospice. I have many fond memories of her, from hanging out at your house munching on her world class chocolate chip cookies, to her death stare from the church choir loft! She and Ping were true pillars of our town and they both will be remembered for their many achievements and their spirit of community and their love for their family.
