 Joseph William “Joe” Albert, 89 of Cheboygan, Michigan, formerly of Richwood, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at the home of his granddaughter in Marion. He was born October 22, 1935 in LaRue to the late Phillip and Margaret (Gunn) Albert.
On June 26, 1955 he married the former Evelyn Herr in the home of her parents in Meeker, and she died January 21, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Gene, Clair, Butch, Andy, and a sister, Demaryl Albert, a sister-in-law, Juanita Fields, and a grandson, Jason Albert Welch.
Joe served our country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He then worked at B. F Goodrich for several years before he started training and driving horses for Bob Cheney. He was well known in the area as the owner and operator of Joe Albert Starting Gates from 1984 to 2004. He and Evelyn then moved to Cheboygan, Michigan where they enjoyed their retirement on the Twin Lakes with family and friends year-round.
He is survived by a daughter, Maureen Welch, Cheboygan; a grandson, Zachary (Lindsey) Welch, Richwood; granddaughters, Brittany Welch, Marion; Jennifer (Kyle) Jones, Richwood; a great-grandchildren, Cheyenne (Perry) Barnett; Colin Welch; Nathan, Will and Logan Jones; a great-great-granddaughter, Zoe Barnett; sisters-in-law, Vivian (Steven) Williams, LaGrange, Kentucky; Sandie Albert, Kentonand several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Josh Freshour officiating. Burial will follow at Claibourne Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America #1095. Friends may call two hours prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 AM.

My father, Raymond Jones. graduated with your father. He always spoke highly of your parents and enjoyed catching up with them at the Richwood Fair. My condolences to your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Joe was a great friend.
I worked for him driving and maintaining "our" gates
He stopped by the shop when he was in town. I will miss his visits RIP Joe
