Richard Albert GriffithLife-long Richwood resident Richard Albert Griffith, 90, died on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at his Kinney Pike home after a short illness.

Richard was born November 6, 1934, and raised by parents Harry and Hazel Holt Griffith on their Route 47 farm near Richwood. His brother, Stanley Griffith (Mary) resides in Venice, Florida. His sister, Bette Michael, preceded him in death. Her husband, Larry Michael, survives in Marysville.

Richard graduated from Richwood High School in 1952. He married his high school sweetheart, Doris Shoup, on November 18, 1956, in the First United Methodist Church, Richwood. The couple soon bought their Kinney Pike farm and resided there for 68 years. The farm was eventually named the B-Bar-B Farm after daughters Bethany Gwynn (John) of Newark, Ohio, Barbara Sullivan (Randy) of West Mansfield and Belinda Nauman (Brian) of Richwood. “Favorite” grandchildren are Benjamin Richard Nauman (Molly) and Breanna Jackson (Marvin). Great-grandchildren include Bruin Richard, Annaleigh and Griffin Nauman, Beckleigh and Marshall Jackson, who called him “Moon Pie.” Richard loved his family above all, except his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Richard was a member of the Richwood Church of Christ, where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Trustee. He was baptized by immersion on December 31, 1967. He enjoyed being a part of the Young at Heart group.

Richard bought Griffith Carpet Shoppe on Blagrove Street in 1971 and was a generous donor for many community events. He loved being a salesman. He also sold cars at Vernon Thomas Chevrolet and was honored in Ohio as a top salesman of Chevrolets and Oldsmobiles. His first salesman job was at Schaffner Furniture in Marion. Living on the farm and taking care of it was a job he loved. He maintained a large garden and often gave his vegetables to neighbors and friends.

As President of the Richwood Fair Board for over 20 years, he worked hard year-round to make the fair fun and safe for all. He was selected as Grand Marshall for the Fair Parade in 2004. That year, Governor Bob Taft presented Richard with the Fair Supporter Award.

Richard loved the harness horses he raised and raced at county fairs, Scioto Downs, Miami Valley and Northfield racetracks.  His horses set records at various tracks around the area, and he owned over 30 horses. He loved traveling to the races with his family. He also was a starter in the Clair Baker Starting Gate as a young man. He was a member of the United States Trotting Association, The Ohio Harness Horsemen Association and the Richwood Matinee Club.

Playing euchre, bid euchre and pinochle was a favorite leisure activity. Richard played golf and achieved a hole-in-one. He was in the Richwood Lions Club, served as President of the Richwood-North Union Alumni Association, and played the spoons in the Richwood Civic Center Kitchen Band. Richard was inducted into the North Union Wall of Pride in 2013. He spent many evenings at NU sports events to support his daughters and grandchildren.

In high school, Richard was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and track and held several records and ran in the State Track Meet.  In 1961, he was presented with the Richwood High School Alumni Association Award for remarkable achievements as “one of the most outstanding athletes to play for Richwood High School in Football, Basketball and Track.” He was president of FFA and performed in the class plays. He raised sheep and steers for 4-H and was a counselor at 4-H Camp. He was in Junior Leadership.

Richard served in the Army in Korea. He played football for the I CORP and was able to travel to Guam and Japan with the team. He played for the Hunt Milling Company Basketball team and was a football referee as a young man.

Richard and Doris loved to travel the United States and in Europe but also enjoyed camping with friends and family and using their pontoon boat at Indian Lake. While wintering in Crystal Lake Village in Wauchula, Florida, for 33 years, he made many close friends. It was there he learned to play bocce ball, and his prowess earned him the nickname King Richard. He also played shuffleboard and horseshoes on the CLV traveling team. In Florida, he attended the First Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held Saturday June 28, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Richwood Church of Christ on Sivey Road. Pastor Craig Bradds will officiate.   Burial will follow at the Claibourne Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4-7 pm at the church.

The Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home is assisting the family.

I received many free basketball 🏀 lessons from Richard at my parents home of 301 Grove Street. Richard was always willing to play a little one on one. Later I was blessed to serve with him at the Richwood Church of Christ. So many wonderful memories of this man and the love he had for the Lord, his wife, his girls, their husbands,  and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. I praise God today knowing he finished this race well. We’re praying for you all in the days ahead. In Christ love Jeff and Pam
