Phyllis Ann Carey
Phyllis Ann CareyRed Rose2Phyllis Ann Carey, age 85, died peacefully at her home in New Bloomington and her immortal soul went to be with the Lord God on Saturday morning, February 1, 2025.

Phyllis was born December 28, 1939, in Delaware County to the late Phillip Anthony Daugherty and Mable Gertrude (Swartz) Daugherty Watkins.

Phyllis spent her childhood on her parent’s truck farm where she developed a strong work ethic and love of gardening.  She graduated from Pleasant High School and kept in touch with many of her classmates throughout her long life.  After high school, Phyllis worked for GTE in Marion until shortly after she married William Carey when she became pregnant with their first child.

Working was important to Phyllis and during her lifetime she had many different occupations. In addition to working for GTE, she was a housewife and she worked on the family farm.  She became a nurse’s aide and then went back to college and graduated Marion Technical College as a nurse. After graduation, Phyllis worked as an Intensive Care Unit nurse at Memorial Hospital in Marysville until she retired. However, the job that Phyllis loved the most and excelled at best and was her true career was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

On November 4, 1962, Phyllis married the love of her life, William Robert Carey, who passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 and after which she missed him deeply.
Phyllis is survived by five sons: John P. (Signe) Carey of University Park, Maryland, Mark R. (Nancy) Carey of Upper Sandusky, David W. (Melinda) Carey of Waldo, James A. (Stacie) Carey of New Bloomington and Michael H. (Kellie) Carey of Cheshire, and their eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her brother David (Martha) Daugherty of Marion along with numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.  Phyllis was preceded in death by both her parents and her sister Sara Baxter.

Phyllis will be greatly missed by all her surviving family.

Phyllis had a lifelong love of learning new things as is evident from her late entry to college and nursing degree.  She also took up karate and earned a blackbelt, penned and self-published several books, had a passion for music and wrote and recorded several albums of songs and even had some of her songs professionally recorded. One of the things that she will be most remembered for was her strong faith and the lovely dinner time prayer she sang before each and every meal. Her children and grandchildren will continue to sing this prayer for generations to come. She also refused to say “good-bye” to anyone and would instead say “Too-da-loo”.  Phyllis will also be remembered for loving to cook and enjoying “her own cooking”, feeding many friends and loved ones at family meals and gatherings. She also enjoyed visiting with friends, ice skating, wine making, and collecting and restoring antique furniture.

Funeral Services celebrating her life will be held Saturday February 8, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood. Pastor Joseph Rhea will officiate. Friends may call Friday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home in Richwood.
Private burial will take place in the Price Cemetery at a later date.

Some of my best memories growing up were when Phylliss was visiting my mom or when we were at Karate practice.  She was a kind sweet soul that made everyone happy to be around her.  My deepest condolences to her family who are in my prayers.

I was the director of the ICU in Marysville when Phyllis worked there. I will never forget the loving care she gave to her patients, their families and her peers. She was a lovely person.
