It is with great sadness that the family of Wayne Emery, 82 of Prospect, announce his passing on January 20, 2025. Wayne died peacefully in his sleep, having spent the previous several days surrounded by family and friends singing his favorite hymns and sharing memories.
Wayne was born December 1, 1942 in Marion, the only child of Maxine (Griffith) and Floyd Emery of Prospect. Maxine and Floyd ran the local grocery store in town for most of Wayne’s childhood and adolescence. This time proved incredibly formative for Wayne, engendering a love of Prospect that would last his entire life. He would go on to serve the village as a township trustee and fiscal officer for a combined total of nearly 50 years and as a member of the Prospect Lions Club for over 55 years. He loved sports, especially all things related to the Buckeyes. He owned and operated a card shop in Prospect for many years. He was a lifelong member of the Prospect United Methodist Church.
Wayne graduated from Prospect High school in 1961. He would go on to attend and graduate from The Ohio State University in 1966 with a degree in Education. He would use his degree to further serve his community, teaching at Elgin Junior High School for 30 years and as a substitute teacher for an additional 12 years. He also coached 7th grade basketball and little league baseball. In public, he was often approached by his former students to be told of the impact he had on their lives. He loved his work, the opportunity to serve, and the role he played in other people’s lives.
Wayne loved to travel. After graduating from college he spent his free time visiting points far and wide. His faith often guided his travels. He would visit historically important places to Christianity, including Jerusalem, the Garden of Gethsemane, and areas that were closed to proselytizing the good news of the Gospel. One of Wayne’s favorite travel stories was his trip to communist Russia with smuggled Bibles that were distributed to underground churches and believers throughout the totalitarian regime. He continued traveling with his children and grandchildren through 2018.
Wayne married Sharon (Greenwood) McCoy in 1988 and adopted her two daughters Erin and Carrie. His daughters and their children were his chief joy in his later years. He loved to spend time with them and, moreover, he loved to spoil them at Christmas, their birthdays, and at every occasion he could find. His children and grandchildren who survive him will be forever grateful for his generosity and love. He is survived by Erin (Dustin) Shook, and their son Arden Shook of Ada, Carrie (Levi) Pasma, and their children, Ryan, Austin, Tyler, Adney, and Bonnie Pasma of LaRue.
Among his greatest pleasures in life were playing the dulcimer, teaching others how to play, and attending festivals and gatherings with his friends. He hosted monthly music gatherings through December 2024. He spent his last years in a cabin living life side-by-side with the Pasma family.
Funeral Services will be held Friday January 24, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Prospect Methodist Church. Pastors Gene Phelps and Tim Pasma will officiate. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday January 23, 2025 from 4-7 pm at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Prospect.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Prospect Methodist Church, P O Box 6 Prospect, Ohio 43342

Mr. Emery was one of the nicest and genuine individuals I have ever known. I have so many great memories. I knew him as a young child visiting his parents’ market to buy a bag of candy. Later, he was our youth leader at church. Then later I enjoyed being one of his students. Lastly, I considered Wayne a good friend.
I will always remember his strong voice singing in church. No microphone was ever needed.

I am the daughter of Bruce Emery. I always noticed and was grateful my grandfather, Robert Emery, had Wayne living so close by. It made me happy to read about Wayne’s full life. Many of his actives I did not know about. I wish he could have hung in there another 2 days to enjoy the big win. He is an Emery man.

Wayne was always a good friend, and one of the nicest people in the world to spend time with. Always a smile on his lips, and a sweet comment or story to tell. Wayne was a lovely dulcimer player, always articulate and smooth. Then he'd pull out the harmonica and things would really get going... And then he'd get out the musical saw! Well, it got wild after that! I remember hearing stories about one dulcimer festival that we traveled to, and our bunch had a really great time having a 'grape throwing' contest. I wasn't actually there for that, but the stories were epic. Wayne was right in there for that. Wayne, you will surely be missed. I'm pretty sure there are dulcimers in Heaven, and the angels will be happy to learn that here comes a great player, and especially a great man. Go with love, Wayne.

I was sad to hear about the passing of Mr. Emery. He was such an amazing teacher at Elgin. He had a unique style of story telling that made learning American History fun. I moved to Prospect in 2010 and when I told friends who grew up in Prospect about the house that my wife and I bought, they'd always say the same thing, "that was Mr. Emery's house." I am honored to know that and I think about it whenever we contemplate any modifications. Rest in peace Mr. Emery.

Paul and I have very fond memories of Mr. Emery as our junior high teacher. He was always very kind, loving his students. Paul got to go on one of his trips to the Indy 500. In our formative young teenage years he was a positive influence. Condolences, but also we pray that you are filled with the sure hope of seeing him again because of Jesus, as we are!

I am a dulcimer player, and I got to know Wayne through dulcimer playing. I actually first became acquainted with Wayne when we both participated in the Great Black Swamp Dulcimer Festival performing tour to Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England in 1987. The tour included about fifteen people, and we performed in all kinds of venues including castles, churches, and pubs. We all had a really good time on that three-week trip, and we introduced the mountain dulcimer to a lot of people who had never seen one before. Following that tour, I would see Wayne occasionally at dulcimer festivals around Ohio. Wayne and I exchanged Christmas cards every year from 1987 to 2023. When I didn't get a card from him this past December (2024), I was concerned about him. Wayne was a kind and gentle man, and I'm glad I've had the privilege of knowing him and keeping up with him over all these years. May you find dulcimers in heaven, Wayne. Ny thoughts and prayers are with your whole family.

Wayne was a special person and teacher. I taught with him many years. He cared for the students in his classroom. If he noticed a student was having trouble, he would come to my office to tell me. He touched many lives in a special way.
