George Henry Stickford, Jr.CrucifixGeorge Henry Stickford, Jr., 84 of Dublin, died Thursday evening, September 26, 2024 at Columbus Alzheimer's Care Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 8, 1940 in Oak Park, Illinois to the late George Henry Sr. and Marion (Doornek) Stickford. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Kay Nelson, Ginny Stickford; a brother, Martin Stickford.

On September 14, 1963 he married the former Rosann Barry in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Marysville and she survives.

George graduated from The Ohio State University with a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena. George was instrumental in doing research in the late 1960s on the JPL “Galileo” Jupiter fact-finding project.  The mission launched years later in 1989, and based upon the accurate calculations of George and his colleague and friend, Wes Menard, a probe successfully entered the Jovian atmosphere to gather data about Jupiter during a 1995 Jupiter flyby.  He later worked at Battelle Memorial Institute and was there for the duration of his career.

George was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was compassionate, caring, gracious and generous of spirit, and was quick to laugh. He was always physically active and enjoyed playing basketball, hiking and backpacking, long-distance cycling, water skiing, kayaking and canoeing. A committed Buckeye fan, he loved men’s basketball and football and watched every game he could.

He was a woodworker and a naturalist who actively sought to conserve and appreciate the world around him. He helped provide habitats for bluebirds by building many birdhouses for them around central Ohio.

A lifelong Catholic, he had been an active member of St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church in Dublin. He was grateful for his life on earth. George was a man of science, but he was also a man of faith, freely acknowledging there was much more in this universe we didn’t know.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Stickford, Phoenix, AZ; Eric (Lara) Stickford, Indianapolis, IN; three grandchildren, Mitch, Kyra and Mark Stickford; a brother, Bill (Sharon) Stickford, Madison, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Brigid of Kildare Church in Dublin on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM with Fr James Black officiating. Burial will follow in the Price Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial gifts may be made to Mid-Ohio Food Collective (www.mofc.org), PO Box 182883, Columbus, OH 43218.

I miss George. He had a sense of empathy about him. He gently engaged with new acquaintances and good friends alike, putting them at ease, often making them laugh. We met at my first job out of school, Battelle. He was diligent about his engineering craft, solving all sorts of difficult problems for clients. He was gently passionate about his faith, introducing me to a community of Christians, Cursillo (Cum Christo), and amazing people at churches across Central Ohio. George, see you in Heaven someday. I miss you brother. ……  Hugs, prayers and condolences to Rosann, Stephane, Eric and their extended family.

My heart is heavy, my spirit is grateful that he had such a happy, full life. His obituary is a beautiful tribute to a good man. I really don't have words that adequately convey my condolences, but I think you know, Roseanne that he is now with God and is happy. I would love to be at the funeral to celebrate his Mass with all of you; hopefully other friends from our class will be there to comfort you and his family and to celebrate the love and kindness that flowed so readily from George. God be with you.
