Julia ThogmartinSeeabrook IslandJulia Thogmartin, 70, of Seabrook Island, South Carolina, died June 29, 2024. She left us all with a legacy of warmth and kindness.

Julia was a lifelong educator, voracious reader and had an incredible ability to bring people together. She dedicated her time and resources to making the world a brighter place and found beauty in life’s simple moments encouraging us all to do the same.

Julia was born in Marysville on May 13, 1954 to the late Paul James and Ellen (Hoffman) Speyer.

After graduation, she began her career in teaching – beginning a 30 year long career in school administration in Ohio.

In 1972, Julia married Don Thogmartin, who she knew and had grown up with in Richwood. Julia and Don went on to have a son, Chris, in 1973.

After 25 years of school administration and teaching in Ohio, Julia retired as the head media specialist for the Galion City School District in 2012 and moved with her husband, Don, to South Carolina which had become their regular vacation getaway.

Julia was a cherished member of the community in Seabrook Island. She served terms as president and vice president of the Seabrook Island National History Group and was involved in numerous other activities on the island. She loved golf, scrapbooking, quilting, traveling the world and entertaining and hosting all of her friends and family.

Julia is predeceased by her son, Christopher Donald Thogmartin, parents Ellen and Paul James Speyer, brothers Gene and Sam Speyer and niece Meg Speyer.

She is survived by her husband Don Thogmartin, granddaughter Lauren (Lawrence) Fuchs of Park City, Utah, siblings, Joe (Marty) Speyer of Richwood, Sally (Charlie) Corbett of Huron and James (Heather) Speyer of Findlay
sister-in-law, Phylis Speyer of Garner NC., beloved canine, Ginger and many treasured family members.

Julie was my first cousin and I would come visit as a child usually when my family were  house hunting to move. I loved coming to the farm to see my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Julie and Don came to visit us in Oklahoma. She will be missed. Thoughts and prayers go out to her family. 🙏🙏😇😇

Julia was my friend and classmate all through school.  I had the privilege of standing up for her wedding to Don.  I lost touch a few times as I've moved often, but we continued to share Chrustmas cards every year.  She was such a genuine sweet kind person and I can't believe she's gone...my prayers are with you Don as I know how hard it is to lose the love of your life...

So very sad & heartbroken for all of Julia’s family & special friends left behind. There are just no words for her leaving so suddenly & unexpectedly. I’m sure the angels were singing, the confetti was flying and all of those gone before forming a gauntlet to welcome her home. RIP, Julia, & raise a little Cain up there with Chris!

Dear Don, Haven’t seen you for a long time. As I read the obituary I realize Julia may have interacted with my sons who attended Galion City Schools from K thru 12, though I didn’t know Julia was an educator in Galion!   You are in my thoughts at this painful time as I know some of what you’re going through losing a spouse.

With sadness, I learned of Julia's passing. I had the privilege of working with her while she was the media center specialist at Galion Middle School in the 1980s. She believed strongly that the media center served an important role in furthering a child's education. She dedicated herself to that task. But equally important, she created lasting relationships with staff members. Her smile was contagious. May peace be with her family.
