Julia Lee “Judy” Roberts
Julia Lee “Judy” RobertsGolf GreenJulia Lee “Judy” Roberts, 101 of Marion, died peacefully early Friday morning, January 27, 2024 at the Kingston Residence of Marion.

She was born September 2, 1922 in Hardin County, the second of five children to Everett and Frances (Sieg) Detwiler. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Joseph and Phillip Detwiler, and a sister, Rebecca Tillman.

Judy was a 1940 graduate of Marysville High School. In 1942 she married Russell Roberts, to whom she was a loving and devoted wife for 58 years. Very shortly after their marriage Russell was deployed to Normandy where he served in the Army during WWII. Russell preceded her in death in 2000. Their beloved son, Michael also preceded her in death in 1977 at the age of 25.

Judy was a lifetime member of the Richwood First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and summer Bible School for many years. She was a 50-year member of the former Mt. Carmel Chapter #42 Order of the Eastern Star. She held membership in the Child Conservation League, Kings Daughters, and Carpe Diem Club.

An excellent cook, she loved to entertain family and friends, especially during the holidays, her favorite being Christmas. She and Russ enjoyed playing cards and were participants in both euchre and bridge clubs. They also loved to dance and attended many charity balls.

She looked forward to spending winters at their Florida home where she enjoyed the game of golf and renewing friendships. She was a member of Marysville Country Club and Kings Mill Golf Course. In her later years Judy enjoyed golfing at Marion Country Club. A fine golfer indeed, she was best known for her chipping and putting.

Watching The Ohio State Buckeyes football and basketball games was a favorite pastime as well as watching PGA golf tournaments.

A green thumb with a passion for flowers, she had one of the prettiest yards and gardens around.

A wonderful farm wife, Judy always said the happiest times were her many years living on the family farm—a special place to raise their four children. You could find her in the field driving the tractor, in the kitchen preparing lunch for farmworkers, or cooking for the family. Between those times she was in the car, taking or picking up her children from piano lessons and sports practices.

She was a remarkable role model who taught her children integrity, good values, responsibility and the importance of a strong family. Her heart was full of compassion and love.

Judy will be missed dearly by her children, Connie (Bill) Cowgill, Marion; Denny (Judi) Roberts, Punta Gorda, Florida; and Jody (Nick) Wall, Marion. She was a loving grandmother and will be greatly missed by 7 grandchildren, Tiffany Wood, Tracy (Richard) Stover, Robyn Zevchik, Brynne Dieterle, Kacy Kirby, Jesse Wall, and Bart (Brooke) Wall, as well as 3 step-grandchildren, Dan Campbell, Jason (Linda) Cowgill and Cassie (Chad) Vanhorn. She also loved 18 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, February 2, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Richwood First Methodist Church with Pastor Joseph Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery. Her family will greet guests on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood.

The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to Capital City Hospice as well as the staff at Kingston Residence for their compassionate care.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Richwood First Methodist Church, 18 S. Fulton St., Richwood, OH 43344 or the VFW Post 870, P. O. Box 164, Richwood, OH 43344.

Denny, Connie and Jodi and families, you have been in my thoughts and prayers.  Judy was involved in our class of '65 from elementary to high school and well loved by our classmates. Years later she would come when we had our nursey and would browse for plants in her landscaping.  She didn't pick the perfect one, she wanted the unique one! Like her!
