Kathleen "Kathy" Thiel
Kathleen SewingKathleen "Kathy" Thiel, 73 of Prospect, passed away January 23, 2024, at the Riverside Hospital after courageously fighting an extended illness.

She was born May 15, 1950 in Marion to the late Leo and Mary (Winters) Houk. She is also preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Kreis.

Kathy graduated from Ridgedale High School in 1968. On November 25, 1988, she married Steven Thiel, and they spent the next 35 years together. After retiring from Cigna in the early 90’s, she was able to devote time to her love of gardening and sewing.  Due to her extraordinary attention to detail, she became quite the master seamstress and embroiderer.  Kathy and Steve enjoyed traveling and spending time at their Lake Erie summer home fishing, sightseeing, visiting wineries, and local cuisine.

We will greatly miss Kathy’s quirky jokes and off the wall comments.

Kathy is survived by her husband Steven Thiel, her four children, Lori Wilson of Jensen Beach Fl, Angie (Dan) Jackson of Prospect, Jaime (Kurt) Grossmann of Ostrander, Logan Blank of Mt. Juliet, TN and two stepchildren Stephanie Thiel of Honolulu, HI and Dan (Vivian) Thiel of Seville.  She is also survived by three brothers Michael (Sharon) Houk of Olathe, KS, Robert (Lori) Houk of Morrison, CO, Jerry Houk of WI, three sisters Jan Bowers of Gainesville, GA, Linda (Ray) Russell of Richwood, and Deborah (Robert) Schmidt of Waldo, 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday January 28, 2024 at 4:00 pm at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Prospect. Pastor Steve Whitaker will officiate. Friends may call two hours prior to the service beginning at 2:00 pm at the funeral home in Prospect. Graveside services will be held Monday January 29, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Grand Prairie Cemetery.

We were so sad to hear about your families loss. Kathy was always so bubbly and a ball of energy in high school. She was funny and kind. She always tried to include others with her outgoing personality.

I met kathy thru my mother in law and she was always a good friend to me. Even though she was in Ohio and I was in Florida we managed to write back and forth via this thing called email when it first came out and we spoke on the phone and shared all of life's little puzzles. I think we clicked because we appreciated each other's sense of humor very much and I am grateful to have met her. She grew one of the biggest zucchini's I ever saw in my life !I know she will be terribly missed by her family and I offer my deepest condolences to her husband Steve, her daughters and her entire family ❤️ rest in peace dear friend

Kathy was a very warm caring person. She made my transition from Baltimore, MD to Columbus, OH so much easier. I did not know anybody when I arrived. She introduced me to a lot of new people who I am still friends with today. By knowing Kathy back in the 80's, I got a chance to watch her daughters and son grow up from afar. I'll never forget the times I took Kathy and her daughter, Jamie (different year) to the Little Brown Jug. Great memories. WE will all miss you Kathy.
