Richard William Carey
Richard William CareyT-6 TexanRichard William Carey, 91 of Green Camp, entered his Savior’s home on August 2, 2023.  He passed away peacefully of natural causes.

Richard was born on July 8, 1932, at his grandparents’ home in Norton to the late Edwin J. Carey and Lucille Mary (Lauer) Carey, both of Green Camp.  He graduated from Green Camp High School in 1950 and attended The Ohio State University.  He married Betty Lou (Kull) Carey of Marion on August 23, 1952, at the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church, Marion and she died June 27, 2011.

They had five children: Deborah Lee (Jeff) Crawford of Dallas, Texas, Richard William (Lynn) Carey II of Prospect, Mary Lucile (LeValle) McCrary of Washington Court House, Russell Jacob Carey (deceased), and Matthew Albert (Susan) Carey of Cincinnati.   He was also grandfather of nine grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, with one deceased.

Richard grew up on his parents’ poultry farm with his younger siblings, William Robert Carey (deceased), Ruth Ann (Roger) Stoffer of Vero Beach Fl, and Charles H. Carey (deceased).  Edwin and Lucille raised their children in a Christian home.  Richard was a long-time member of the Mount Olive United Methodist Church and currently was a member of Rush Creek United Methodist Church of Essex.
He went on to make a career of farming and helped manage Carey Farms, Inc.  He and his brother William went on to purchase their own farmland and formed Carey Brothers Partnership.  He was a past member of the Young Farmers and Ohio Poultry Association. He was a past president of the Green Camp Elevator, Marion County Farm Bureau Federation, and Marion Landmark.  Richard and Betty instilled an appreciation for agriculture in their children.

As a young man, Richard acquired his private pilot’s license and went on to own several different WW2 training planes.  He survived a crash landing of his North American SNJ-4 in Allentown Pennsylvania on May 12, 1958, due to mechanical failure. He was a past member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

He was very active in the Marion and Green Camp communities.  He was a member of the Marion Hobby Club, Marion Area Genealogy Society, Marion Amateur Radio Club, American Radio Relay League, Masonic Lodge #70, Marion Commandery #B6 Knights Templar, and was a lifetime member of the Meeker Sportsman Club. He was a past Democratic candidate for Marion County Commissioner and Green Camp Trustee.  He was a lifetime benefactor member of the NRA.  His true passion was collecting and preserving Marion County antiques and memorabilia. He was a past president and member of the Marion County Historical Society. Richard dedicated his time and talents to the education of Marion County history and the growth of the Historical Society.

In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his family and friends to Europe, the Middle East, South America, and to the Ukraine.  He flew to various states throughout the US.  He volunteered through the Salvation Army and the Marion Amateur Radio Club to help with relief efforts in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters.

Richard will be greatly missed by his family and friends. “KB80TZ has signed off” <‘73’ (Best Wishes) and ‘88’ (Love and kisses)>.

One of the joys of my life was the opportunity to spend time with Richard as we talked about Marion history, sorted through thousands of items he wished to donate to the Marion County Historical Society, told stories (mostly true), and just enjoyed each other's company.  He was truly a good friend who I will deeply miss but am joyful for having had the opportunity to know.

So sorry for your loss. My dad was born on the exact same date and was also a pilot, sure wish they could’ve gotten together. He was also a farmer, but was more into cattle and hogs, even though we did have some chickens. Also, wish I could’ve gotten to know him because he sounds like he was a great man and he raised a wonderful daughter in Mary. Love and many prayers to your family.

In this time of great sorrow, may his memories help sustain you the rest of your days. Richard was  good friend to my husband Mark who Always talked about their their service together for the 9/11 deployment. As they paired the two Ohioans  But he didn’t stopped there, he included me & our children as a matter of fact. I have many fond memories of some of the outings he took us in around Marion. He was a presence but also kind & humble. His loss is so huge leaving a  deep void. He’ll always stay in our memories.
