Janis Lorene (Patrick) Welsh
Janis Lorene (Patrick) WelshBarnJanis Lorene (Patrick) Welsh, age 96, of Richwood, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Legacy Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation (formerly Promedica) in Marion.

She was born in Richwood on February 27, 1927, to Edna H. (Bell) and Faris A. Patrick.  She was the youngest of their three children and was especially fond of and close to her maternal grandparents Nancy and Joseph Bell.

Janis grew up in Richwood, where she participated in a wee bit of mischief with her older siblings and friends.  She was a 1945 graduate of Richwood High School, and the salutatorian of her class.  She remained close throughout life to six of her school friends: Martha Moore, Ruth Eileen Shirk, Betty Simmons, Monie Sellers, Dottie Davis, and Donna Riedmiller.  She referred to the group as the “Get-Together Girls” as they had frequent ‘get-togethers’ through the years.

During WWII, Janis went to work briefly at the ordnance plant in Marion.  She joked that the war ended because they heard she was making the bombs!  On October 26, 1947, she married her high school sweetheart Paden E. (“Gene”) Welsh.  She was a ‘city girl’ who then had to learn to be a ‘country girl’ and farm wife.  She adapted and helped around the farm, whether it was hauling wagons, raking hay, or bottle-feeding lambs.  She was a house cleaner extraordinaire!  Although she didn’t like to cook, she served 3 meals each day.  In 1957, their daughter Julie was born.  In 1964, they moved to the farm on Kinney Pike.  After 55 years of marriage, sadly Paden (“Gene”) passed away in 2003.  Janis remained on the farm until 2011, when she moved back into Richwood.  She certainly missed the farm, country life, and the wildlife, though.  She enjoyed visiting the farm, which is now being improved and lovingly cared for by the young family of McKenzie (Robinson) and Nathan Price.

Janis loved her family deeply, and hosted many ‘Family Dinners’ at the farm.  Referencing a childhood nickname, she was affectionately known as “Aunt Dutch” to many.  She had a big heart, a sharp mind, and a great sense of humor.  She joked that her “Get-Together Girls” were waiting for her to arrive in Heaven to provide the comic relief!  She loved talking on the phone to stay in touch with family and friends, and she loved visitors.  She also loved chocolate, ice cream, and almost anything sweet!

Janis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister and best friend Melva Shuman; brother Joseph W. (“Pat”) Patrick; sister-in-law Mary Ann Click; three brothers-in-law Ross, Ted, and Bob Welsh; son-in-law Dan Wisma; two nephews Spencer Jordan and Danny Patrick; niece Jill Pershing; dear cousin Noan Fausnaugh; the six other “Get-Together Girls”; and close friend Ruth Taylor.  She is survived by her daughter Julie Wisma; beloved niece and ‘second daughter’ Connie Hill (Bob); dear and caring cousin Nan McConnaughey; step-grandsons Andy Wisma and Kevin Wisma (Staci); step-grandchildren Preston, Lily, and Peyton Wisma; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She is also survived by her good friends Bonita Moore and the Moore Family, Jeff and Julie Robinson and the Robinson Family, and Ron and JoAnn Belville.

Janis was a member of the Richwood Civic Center and Richwood VFW Post 870.  She was a life-long member of the Richwood Church of Christ.  Church members Barb Swartz and Jeff and Patti Evans were especially kind to her in her final years.  Many thanks are owed to family members, friends, and church members who brightened her days with visits, phone calls, cards, and sweet treats!  The family also wishes to thank her nursing home roommate Juanita Fields and her wonderful family for looking out for Janis, bringing her treats, and making her laugh.  Thanks also to the dedicated volunteers who delivered Memorial Mobile Meals to her at home; Shelly Pierce and the ladies of HomeCare Solutions; Memorial Health; ViaQuest Hospice; and Promedica Hospice.

According to her wishes, Janis will be cremated, and there will be no visitation.  A private graveside service for the interment of her ashes will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at the Claibourne Cemetery.  Jeff Evans has graciously accepted the family’s request to perform the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Richwood Church of Christ, Richwood VFW Post 870, or Richwood Civic Center.

The Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood is assisting the family.

Julie, my thoughts and prayers have been with you and Connie and other cousins during this long journey you have been on as a loving caregiver for your husband and your mother.  Your mother was very special and always had a smile and kind words every time I saw her. I know the love she had for Melva and Melva for her.  They are both missed but are now reunited in heaven.
