George Ann (Retterer) CharlesGeorge Ann (Retterer) Charles, 95 of Richwood, passed away on May 18, 2023, in her home. She was born in West Mansfield on August 9, 1927, to the late George Benjamin and Arthelma Ruth (Fout) Retterer. She was married to Cecil Sherman Charles, son of Cecil Stephen and Martha Gladys (Lavender) Charles on May 21, 1944. George Ann graduated from Richwood High School in 1944, completing her requirements a year early so she could accompany Cecil when he left for army training during WWII. Cecil preceded her death on December 7, 1986. They celebrated forty-two years of marriage together.

George Ann was very active in the community, having owned and operated Charles Auto Parts Co., with Cecil, from 1944 to 1998. She was a member of Richwood First United Methodist Church, a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, choir member, finance chairperson, and served on the personal needs committee.

She was a member of Mt. Carmel Chapter Ohio Eastern Star for 70 years and served as WM., DGM, and District President.

George Ann was a pillar of the community, volunteering her time and talents in Union County, holding several leadership roles including: President of the Ohio Children’s Council League, 50-year member of Carpe Diem Literary Club, Mental Health & Recovery Board, and Chairman of the county art contest. She served as President and Treasurer of Union County Republican Women and was Union County Republican Chairwoman from 1987 to 2003. She received the “Tribute to Women” award from the Ohio Federation of Republican Women.

When she was not making an impact on her community, she loved spending time with her family and friends, reading, doing needlework, and playing pinochle and mahjong. Throughout her life, she enjoyed riding Cushman scooters and attending shows, making new friends along the way. In 1944, George Ann started researching and recording her family lineage, proudly publishing in 2017, the Retterer Family History Book.

George Ann lived a full active life, she left a lasting impact on the community she loved and will greatly be missed by her family & friends.
