Stephen W. Kavanagh
Stephen W. KavanaghFlagStephen W. Kavanagh, 78 of Marysville, died unexpectedly Monday, March 20, 2023 at Memorial Hospital of Union County.

He was born December 15, 1944 in Marion to the late Delbert Ray and Bonita Rose (Wright) Kavanagh.

Steve could often be seen mowing the grass on his property on Route 4 at “the point” and tending to the garden. In his retirement, he and his partner, Linda have run “From My Garden” for many years, selling dried flowers, herbs, honey and other natural items.

A 1962 graduate of Byhalia-York High School, he was a good basketball and baseball player. Steve was an avid hunter when he was young and loved hunting with his Grandpa Freddy. He raised sheep as a young boy through early adulthood and was active in the FFA. Steve served our country in Vietnam in the U. S. Army. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3320 in Marysville.

He worked at Goodyear for many years as a shift foreman, retiring in 2003. He was a good poker player in his younger years and enjoyed gambling. He took frequent trips down to the river to play on the riverboat casino, slots being his favorite game. He loved solving Sudoku puzzles as well as putting together picture puzzles with his sisters or with his daughter and grandchildren.

The annual trip to the Deer Creek cabins with his family was always a highlight of the year for Steve, being able to spend time with his entire family. Steve loved his grandkids and enjoyed his regular visits to see them, as well as attending their various sporting events.

He is survived by his daughter, Gina (Greg) Ballinger, Richwood; his partner of 36 years, Linda Sanford, Marysville; three grandchildren, Avery, Derek, and Sienna Ballinger, Richwood; three sisters, Rae Nita (Joe) Elliot, West Mansfield; Vicki Harvey, West Mansfield; Carolyn Scheiderer, Delaware; an aunt, Maxine Vicario, Bellefontaine; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Jim Harvey.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 24, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Joseph Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in the Byhalia Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Union County Honor Guard and the U. S. Army. Friends may call two hours prior to the service, starting at 11:00 AM.

Memorial gifts may be made to VFW Post 3320, 15237 Industrial Pkwy., Marysville, OH 43040.
