John F. Oates
John F. OatesRichwood FairJohn F. Oates, 76 of the Byhalia area, died peacefully Wednesday May 18, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He had fought cancer for 5 years.

He was born December 17, 1945 in Kenton to the late Arhl Sr. and Gail (Robinson) Oates. John graduated from the first class of the Ridgemont Golden Gophers, in 1964. He then married his high school sweetheart in Michigan, the former Sherry (Phelps) on November 26, 1966 and she passed April 17, 2002.

John was raised on the farm and continued farming all of his life, only to retire two years ago due to failing health. He passed the love of farming onto his grandson who continues that family farming tradition. Most recently he became a great grandfather in March to baby Axell and he lit up with a smile when he saw him.

John was a York Township Trustee from 1978-2005. He was also a 25-year member of the Richwood Fair Board, this made him an Honorary Fair Board Member. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in all their activities, from fair projects to their many school activities. He and Sherry spent some winters camping in Texas, Arizona and Florida. He then spent the last winters in North Ft. Myers, enjoying the sun and sharing his love of strawberries with his friends there.

He and Sherry raised two children, Traci Hoffman and Tim Oates, both of West Mansfield, grandchildren: Tate (Kelby) Hoffman, Thane (Lissie) Hoffman, Lexie, Jackie & Hayden Oates, great grandson, Axell Hoffman
Friend, Jane Grose
Brother, Arhl Jr (Betty) Oates and 3 nieces and 1 nephew and many dear friends.
John and family enjoyed the 3 foreign exchange students whom they kept in contact with, Salome, Karen and Marc.

Private graveside services will be held at the York Cemetery, Pastor April Phillips will officiate.

John wanted a “party”… so to celebrate his life, we will be doing just that. A hog roast will be provided at the Richwood Fairgrounds Secretary’s office on Saturday May 21, 2022 from 3-6 pm. You are invited to bring a side dish and lots of stories to share.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Richwood Independent Fair, Po Box 71 Richwood, Ohio 43344

The Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood is assisting the family.

Condolences and remembrances may be expressed at www.stofcheck-ballinger.com.

Traci and Tim,
I am so sorry. John was one of my favorite grown ups while I was growing up.  He could laugh, act silly, pull great pranks and still be so tender. I loved hearing your parents and mine laughing playing cards and who could forget all the pizza and pop. You are both in my prayers along with all the family. As you know, parents can go before us but they are never truly gone. They show up in our memories, our thoughts and yes even in our mirrors. Love you.
