Ruth Moloney Cowgill
Ruth Moloney CowgillCrucifixRuth Moloney Cowgill, 95 of Marysville, died August 15, 2021 at the Memorial Gables.  
She was born December 5, 1925, in the country home of her parents, Edmond and Ethel (Saum) Moloney in Marion County and died after a blessed and full life.

A child during the Great Depression, Ruth graduated 1943 Prospect High School during World War II.  She was employed in the offices of the Huber Manufacturing Co., Scioto Ordnance Plant until the war ended, and then Marion Steam Shovel.

On June 27, 1948 she married Dr. Edward Cowgill at St. Mary’s Church in Marion, where she had been baptized as an infant.  They shared forty-one wonderful years together.  He proceeded her in death November 5, 1989.

Ruth was a devoted wife and loving mother.  Her happiest years were spent as a stay-at-home mom as she and her husband raised their four children, Alan Cowgill, Springfield; Pamela Johnston of Marysville; Keith (Mary) Cowgill, New Albany and Dr. Kevin (Cindy) Cowgill, Marysville.   She cherished her 8 grandchildren, Wendy (John) Bowles, Christopher Johnston, Edward Cowgill, Colleen Cowgill, Brittany (Scott) Spitnale, Mark Cowgill, Samantha (Jacob) Irwin, and Jessica Cowgill, and five great grandchildren, Jonathan (JC), Chase, Max, Aria and Kaydence.

In addition to her husband, and parents she was preceded in death by her son Keith Cowgill and by five brothers and their spouses, John (Rosella), Bill (Thelma), Bob (Patricia), Eddie (Helen) and Albert Moloney.

Ruth is survived by her 3 children, grandchildren, one sister, Rose Harty of Marion.  She was an aunt to many nieces and nephews.  

She was elected to serve on the first Parish Council of St. Joseph’s Church in La Rue and for many years, chaired the Social Committee of the Women’s Guild.
                                       
After their last child left home for college, she became a Red Cross Volunteer and truly loved working at the reception desk of Marion General Hospital for over 39 years.

In 1982, following her husband’s retirement, they enjoyed vacationing many winters in Florida in their motor home.

Ruth was Chairperson of Richwood Park Day annual fund raiser, for over twenty years.  Proceeds were used to purchase 12 new pieces of playground equipment, an Amish built gazebo and many, many other park improvements.

In 1997 Ruth was chosen ‘Grand Marshall” of Richwood’s Christmas Parade by the Richwood Business Association.

In 2003 she was Chairperson of “Ohio Bicentennial” celebration in Richwood, sponsored by the “Ohio Bicentennial Committee of Union County” and the “Village of Richwood”, and served on the Board of Directors of the Richwood Civic Center.

Ruth wrote the history for Prospect ‘class of ’43 for their 50th alumni.  She was also the author of five books, “Edward and Me,” “Ruth’s Rhymes”, and “On Grandfather’s Farm”, 95 Years Of Wisdom” and When The Clock Tower Strikes Hospitality”.  

She enjoyed writing poetry and won a First Place in Ohio Poetry Contests for two of her poems, “Caution Mother’s” and “The Ripe Plum”.  In 1989 Ruth was chosen “Poet of the Year” by the Marion Poetry Club and her poetry was often published.

In 2006 Ruth moved to Marion and often wrote “Guest Columns”   published in the Marion Star.

In 2012, Ruth was nominated for the Pearl S. Roberts award for “Outstanding Community Service by a Senior Citizen” of Marion County.

Ruth was a member of St. Mary’s Church and St. Mary’s widows group.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Marysville, on Friday August 20, 2021 at 11:00 am, presiding will be Father Kevin Kavanagh. Burial will follow at the Claibourne Cemetery, at 2:30 pm.

The Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood is assisting the family.

Ruth had a great gift of organizing, supporting and promoting our Richwood community and our history for many generations to come. Richwood was blessed to have the Cowgill family and will be missed.  Ruth's writings reflected that love of preserving the past for future generations to come.
