Ben E. Bumgarner
Ben E. BumgarnerFall LeavesBen E. Bumgarner, 65 of Richwood, died unexpectedly Sunday morning October 11, 2020 in the emergency room at Memorial Hospital in Marysville.

He was born January 7, 1955 in Marion to the late Millard and Martha (Worthington) Bumgarner, he was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Nina and sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Jon Davis.

Ben was a 1973 graduate of the Elgin High School. He was a life-long farmer, he was able to farm with his father for many years.
Ben had worked as a livestock buyer for the former Heinhold Hog Market and Middendorf Stockyards, he then worked at the Marion Correctional Institute, retiring in 2015. One not to sit still, Ben enjoyed working for Warnerís Locker during deer season.

He was a member of the Richwood Fair Board. He enjoyed his time behind the grill at the North Union football games.

Some of the things that Ben was known for: homemade popcorn (large amounts), his special homemade crackers, his love of trivia questions, long drives to see the country, his sweetcorn patch, motorcycle rides with Pam, playing sudoku and telling dad jokes.

All these things were important in his life, but the most important time for Ben was the time he spent with his large family, he loved cooking for everyone, it was always his goal to get at least a 50 lb. turkey for thanksgiving. He rarely missed a grandkid event; he was also known to be a pretty good babysitter and backup shuttle person for whoever needed him. He would drop anything to help out his family and friends. Ben also had a very ornery relationship with his mother-in-law, Bobbie. Anyone that met or knew Ben knew of his ornery spirit, as someone said, ďwhen you left being with Ben, you left with a smileĒ.

Surviving is his wife: Pam (Seiter), they started dating in high school and have been married for 41 years, their children: Brook (Derrick) Lowe of Richwood and their kids: Paisley and Sutton, Luke Bumgarner of Columbus; Kirby (Jason) Rowe of Richwood and their kids: Jadyn, Henry and Layne; Paige (Justyn) Clevenger of Marysville and their kids: Sadie and Oaklyn; and Autumn Bumgarner of Marysville.
Siblings: Connie (Joe) Isler of Prospect and Ned (Terry) Bumgarner of South Carolina
Step-siblings: Ned (Gail) Cunningham of Mt. Gilead and Nancy (Larry) Rubeck of Raymond and their families
Special friends: Sherryl and Chuck Sheets and Sheryl and Kent Skidmore
Many special nieces and nephew and extended family
We also canít forget his companion, Otis.

Ben will be remembered not as a polished man, but someone with a big heart, warm hugs and that big smile.

There will be a drive-thru calling hours held Friday October 16, 2020 from 2-6 pm at the Richwood Fairgrounds, please enter from the main Race St. entrance and exit to Gill St. Graveside services will be held Saturday October 17, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Claibourne Cemetery, Hayden Stofcheck will officiate.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Richwood Independent Fair, PO Box 71 Richwood, Ohio 43344 and the North Union Athletic Boosters 401 N. Franklin St. Richwood, Ohio 43344

The Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood is assisting the family.

Ben was funny always helpful. He picked me up at the Columbus airport a year ago. I had promised dinner and he said" We are going to Marysville for BBQ". We did to a little out of the way place I had never been to. AS we went home to Bobbie Seiter's he toured us over roads I did not recognize he laughed and said" I have you lost don't I" Indeed he did.
RIP Ben. My heart goes out to his family.

Memories of Ben bring back the Heinhold Hog Market days of Ben and my dad.  I can still hear Ben clicking those metal tongs to alert the concession stand help at the NU Home Football games that he is coming in from the grill with more cooked hot dogs, burgers, and "dogs on steroids"(Ben's term for brats).  Ben always made me smile with his light hearted manner.  Our paths crossed many times over the years(decades).  My deepest sympathy to Pam and their children/families, his siblings and their families.  Ben:  you have left the rest of us behind way too soon.  You will be missed.

Dear Pam and family, My deepest sympathy for your loss of Ben. He was truly a special person.  I remember when he shared with me that he wanted you to go to university and decide what was best for you, and yet he truly wanted you home...and the two of you together. Your partnership was very special.  The few conversations that we had together when I was back in the States periodically, started up as if there had been no years between the chats.  Ben was one in a million.  I will be thinking of you and your family.  Very sincerely yours, Lee Huffman

A soft-spoken, practical, intelligent man whose Christian virtues were shown daily in how he treated others.   Benís treasures in this life were Pam, his children, and his grandchildren.
I am thankful he saw Paisley compete in the showmanship ring last month at the Richwood Fair.  Also  for her dad, Brook composed a moving testament to the unconditional love he gave to his family.
No matter where the extended family gathered, Ben would quietly move to the edge of the group and watch the joy  on the faces of everyone. If he caught you smiling, his great smile lit up his face and would provide a sense of  joy and peace to others.
Sincerely,
Dick and Pat Seiter

But most of all his love of cooking and pulling pranks as while at a wild game supper, most had venison but he had a crock pot of groundhog meatballs! Ben always had lots of interesting stories and words of wisdom.  His actions spoke louder than his words.  He showed me how a husband should treat his wife, a father should raise his children, a grandpa should enjoy his grandkids and how all people should treat others.  Thank you Ben for being a true gentleman.  You will be missed by many.

I worked with Ben for 17 years at Marion Correctional. I will always remember his sense of humor. He was always playing jokes. The one he liked to do in the Spring was send someone to check the air on the tires of the bush-hog, (these are solid tires). They would be looking all over for a valve stem, and Ben would be in the background chuckling. His popcorn was the best and I make his crackers often. He will be missed.

I choose to remember Ben as we were growing up together.  We were good friends who belonged to the same 4-h club.  We didnít have a care in the world but having fun and good friendships.  I donít have to tell you all the teasing Ben would send my way.  We showed cattle and Ben was always up for a game go cards.  I would like to share with you my memories of Benís mom and dad.  They were true role models of what marriage and family were about.  I always looked forward to 4-H meetings at their house.  Your grandmother was a hard worker with a good sense of humor.  Your grandpa  Was also a gentle giant.  Connie reminds me the most of Benís mom.  Not just in looks but also in personality.  Brenda and Ned shared all the good qualities of both their mom and dad.  Ben reminded me the most of his dad.  That I think is where he got that twinkle and crazy grin from.  I am so sorry that Ben has passed at such a young age.  My heart goes out to all of you.
