I have so many memories with Derek. I used to help him everyday from 6th grade to like my 19th birthday. I would always go to special olympics with the crew. Everytime I walked into the class I’d kiss Derek on his cheek and his giggle is what made me smile everyday. He had sick an amazing soul and was the best. It’s sad that he is gone but peacefully. My heart and soul goes out to his family. You guys had such an amazing and intelligent and inspiring son. He has made me the person I am today. Thank you guys for letting me share my memories.

We are so sorry for you loss. Derek was a joy to be around. His smile was just beautiful. I remember picture day on year, and Luke came down to get him to smile for the camera. Derek just turned away. They took the wheel chair off the stage and pushed it passed the stage and Derek just started laughing and giggling. They hurried and put the wheel chair back on the stage, turned him toward the camera- nothing. No smile nothing. They did this 3 times. I was laughing so hard, what an ornery one he was that day!

My heart is sadden with the loss of Derek. He was one very special guy. As Derek's preschool teacher, I learned so much from him. I had recently started the preschool plus program at North Union and Derek was one of my early students. I was so challenged and nervous. I had had both Jennifer and Mike in high school and now I had their son in class. I was encouraged by them and grew to love Derek. I learned he could communicate with a smile and laughter. He loved when I sang "10 Little Fingers on Derek's hand". He would respond to my voice and we shared many wonderful experiences that I will forever cherish. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time. May God give you strength. Sending love and hugs.
