Emory Allen “Big Mac” McCombs |
Emory Allen “Big Mac” McCombs, 77 of Marion died peacefully Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Marion General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born April 4, 1941 in Columbus to the late Lloyd Ivan and Virginia Mae (Hedges) McCombs.
A 1959 graduate of Scioto Valley High School in Ostrander, he was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He was a member of the Marion Moose Lodge 889.
A semi driver by trade, he had once been an owner-operator for many years, but his last employment was with Ryder, which ran out of Wyandot Popcorn in Marion. Mac was also known for wearing his blue and white striped shirt with "Big Mac" sewn on the chest patch and wearing his traditional cowboy hat.
Known to most as "Big Mac" he found his greatest joy in giving children rides on his hand-built train which he operated at various fairs, celebrations, and events. Each individual train car was tediously created by Mac so that young children would find delight in riding a train. The train car that he loved the most was the caboose. He was a man that was able to create almost anything with wood and he had learned that from his own grandfather.
His favorite saying was "To give is better than to receive" and he lived his life giving to others.
He is survived by a daughter, Peggy (Rich) Curts, Richwood and their children, Colleen (Ryan) Faber, West Mansfield and Nathan Curts, Richwood; a son, Jeff (Cindy) McCombs, Harrington, Delaware and their children, Nicole McCombs, Harrington, Delaware and Christopher Marshall, East New Market, Maryland; two brothers, Lester (Barbara) McCombs, Sparta, Tennessee; Bernard (Jenny) McCombs, Delaware; two sisters, Phyllis (Ronald) Huffman, Lady Lake, Florida; Louise "Irma" Noble, Mt. Vernon. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joy "Joyce" Campbell.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Joe Rhea officiating. Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home in Richwood.
Memorial gifts may be made to Loyal Order of Moose, 1300 Delaware Ave, Marion, OH 43302.

Peggy I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have so many memories of your dad coming to the store when we worked together. He always stopped and talked to me whenever I saw him out anywhere. He always had a kind word and a hug. He will be missed. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Big Mac McCombs was one great man. He and I rebuilt an 8V92 Detroit Diesel and put it in his truck . He paid me well and with that money I bought tools to get started in my life long trade . Big Mac said he had to keep one foot on the brake all the way to Chicago and back . Love ya Mac ! Never forgotten !
