Paul Edward Slonaker |
Paul Edward Slonaker, 56 of Richwood died Sunday evening, November 15, 2015 at Heartland of Marion following a lengthy illness. He was born February 11, 1959 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania to the late Edward G. L. and Elinor (Unger) Slonaker. He was raised in Royersford, PA.
He was an active and dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church in Richwood where he served in various capacities over the years. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from North Adams State. Paul was a freelance writer and researcher. A lot of his research was done for grants he helped write, and for charities. He had worked as a transit cop in Philadelphia.
Paul enjoyed reading anything he could get his hands on and was a faithful patron of the Richwood-North Union Public Library. When he was able, he enjoyed hiking and just being outdoors, enjoying nature’s beauty. Paul was quite a story teller and enjoyed exchanging tales.
On February 12, 1990 he married the former Nancy C. “Nan” Whiton in the South Congregational Church in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and she survives in Richwood. He is also survived by two sisters, Susan (Tommy) Coughlin, Halifax, PA and Jill (Bill) Chendorain, Royersford, PA.
A private family memorial service will take place at a later date. The family is being assisted by Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood.
Memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church, 18 S. Fulton Street, Richwood, OH 43344.

My deepest condolences go to you, Nan, on the loss of Paul. I remember so well your visit at Notre Dame and appreciated Paul's sharing his 'remote view' of what might have happened to Joe. Now he has met Joe- a small consolation at this time of grief. May Paul rest in peace and you have peace and courage as well. You are in my prayers.

Paul and his wife Nan were mentors to two children with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Lunch Buddy program. They mentored the children for several years. Paul shared his life experiences with many children while volunteering at North Union Elementary. He shared a lot of history through his stories but also was a jokester, making the kids laugh.
Paul was loved and will be missed.

Paul was my savior during a traumatic period of my life. I will always be indebted to both he and Nan for what they did for me. During his illness, Paul was brave, courageous and strong. The same can be said for Nan. What a loving couple. My deepest sympathies to you, Nan, my sister.
