Margene I. Markham
Margene I. MarkhamNUWildcatPawMargene I. Markham, 80 of Richwood passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Gables at Green Pastures.  She was born April 10, 1933 in Buchanan, Ohio to the late Ralph and Opal (Shaw) Bayhan.

She retired from the North Union School District after 28 years of service at the Claibourne-Richwood Elementary as secretary and also had worked for Xenia City Schools.  Margene served her school and thoroughly enjoyed all the students she had contact with during her time there.  She always greeted you with a friendly smile and kind word.  A longtime member of the Richwood First United Methodist Church, she was also previously involved with Eastern Star and Union County Republican Women’s Club.

Margene’s favorite time of the year was Christmas.  She loved decorating the house, cooking for Christmas, and spending time with family and friends.  Her biggest enjoyment was her grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.

She is survived by her husband, Victor Markham, Richwood, whom she married January 10, 1951 in Greenup, Kentucky; three sons, Gene (Jeri) Markham, Tucson, Arizona; Marty (Teresa) Markham, Richwood; David Markham, Marion; five grandchildren, Jeremiah, Brent (Elizabeth), Kate, Jack, Dylan, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Joe Rhea officiating.   Burial will follow in Claibourne Cemetery.  Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home in Richwood.

Mrs. Markham was the secretary when I was at Claiborne-Richwood Elementary and I have fond memories of her.  She dug a rock out of my knee in first grade and held my hair when I threw up in third grade.  She taught me to tilt back and squeeze for my nosebleed.  I felt honored to be her lunch-break student-helper in the office and answer phones for her while she ate when I was in sixth grade. She always smiled and remembered my name when I came back my senior year to volunteer there and when I came back from college to complete a classroom experience.  She was a constant at the elementary and only now, as a teacher, do I understand the amazing work she did for us, the teachers, and our school.  Love you Mrs. Markham, Godspeed.

So very sorry to hear the news. Thoughts and prayers to the family. There is never a right time to lose a loved one. Margene always had a smile on her face and always nice things to say. Stan and I and our children Andy, Kate, and Jessica wanted to send our condolences to the entire family. Our children have such fond memories of how kind Margene was to them when they were elementary students. And, when I would stop in at the elementary, I found Margene to be such a welcoming presence. It was clear that she genuinely cared about the children. In later years, whenever I saw her, Margene would ask about my children and how my teaching career was going. She was a sweet, kind, caring person and she will be missed.
