Betty L. Hayes |
Betty L. Hayes, age 80, of Prospect was called home to be with the Lord on May 17, 2011 after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was one of six children born on November 29, 1930 in Marion to the late Henry and Carrie (McGloughlin) Gilbert in Marion. She graduated in 1949 from Harding High School. On December 22, 1950 she married Gilmer Hayes and together they raised four beautiful children. Betty was family oriented and devoted herself to her husband and children as a homemaker. After her children were raised, she became a bookkeeper for the Prospect Farmer’s Exchange. She diligently kept records there for 20 years, until she retired. For over 20 years Betty attended The Church of Christ in Christian Union where she served as their treasurer.
Her two biggest passions in life were her family and cooking. She enjoyed spending time with her family and devoted every Sunday to being the hostess for a large family dinner. Betty was known for her homemade cinnamon rolls and she frequently prepared these to deliver as gifts of appreciation.
Betty is survived by three daughters, Loretta (Michael) Pritchard, Edison; Charlene (Russell) Edwards, Richwood; Vickie Hayes, Prospect; two sisters, Jane Weddington and Artie Rinebolt, both of Marion; eight grandchildren, Charley (Jill) Adkins, Brian Pritchard, Angel (James) Coleman, Matthew (Tera) Pritchard, Amber Rasey, Gilmer Hayes, Clifford (Teresa) Edwards, and Cathyrn Hayes. Betty will be greatly missed by her 15 great-grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by a special brother-in-law and dear friend, Herman “Blackie” Napper, Marion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilmer on June 19, 1986; a son, Harold Hayes on October 16, 2009; a sister, Ruth Napper and brothers, Lewis (Toot) Gilbert and Marvin Gilbert.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 20, 2011 at 3:00 PM in The Church of Christ in Christian Union with Pastor John Burr officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Memorial gifts may be made to The Church of Christ in Christian Union, 1709 Bellefontaine Ave., Marion, OH 43302

Grandma,
I cannot express how pained i still am to know that you are not in my life physically anymore. I still to this day cannot look at a picture of you and see your smile and not cry. I remember your hugs vividly and i could use one. Love your grand-daughter Ali bug

Loretta, during this time, I'm sure you and your sisters will recall many good times with your Mother, from your childhood days to recent days when she was still in good health. Good memories are a wonderful gift. We want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are certainly with you and your family at this time.
