Dover Slone
Dover SloneMarinesDover Slone, age 69 of Richwood, died Wednesday afternoon, May 4, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving and devoted family.  He was born August 2, 1941 in Kimper, Kentucky to the late Grover and Virgie Kathryn (Pinion) Slone.

On April 13, 1968 he married the former Betty J. Thacker in Clintwood, Virginia and she survives in Richwood.

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served as a combat engineer and participated in land operations during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  He worked at Tecumseh in Marion for many years as well as Glenwood Range in Delaware and General Industries in Marysville.  He attended the Prospect Baptist Church.  Dover loved the outdoors and was always on the go.  He enjoyed tinkering around the garage or the yard and was a skilled mechanic with small engine repair.  He was friendly and never knew a stranger.  He was always willing to lend a hand, and his neighbors could always count on his help when needed.  Most of all, he enjoyed being with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Betty, he is survived by a son, Ron (Kimberlee) Slone, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and their children Gavin and Ian Slone; a daughter, Susie (Mark) Gibson, Richwood and their children, Anthony and Kaitlynn Gibson; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Thacker and Minerva Slone.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Richard Allen officiating.  Burial will follow in Price Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Richwood Area Veterans.  Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home in Richwood.

Ron and Susie, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad.  He was a very good man.  I can remember seeing him around the baseball diamond when we were growing up playing ball together, Ron with Clint, and Susie with me.  Your dad was always smiling and good spirited.  He had a way about him that kind of just put you at ease.  Even as a small child, I could tell he was a steady, solid kind of guy you could depend on.  I also know how it feels to lose a father that was loved dearly.  I pray that the days pass gently as you work through the grief and the happy memories are what you are able to focus on as your hearts begin to heal.

Betty and family,
I am so srry for your loss.  I am grateful that I had a chance to meet Dover -  I enjoyed the short time I spent with all of you.  I will remember him and what a loving family you all are.  I smile when I think about some of the stories you shared about Clintwood and Kentucky.
