Thelma Marie Sewell
Thelma Marie SewellThelma Marie Sewell, age 93, formerly of Byhalia died early Wednesday morning, May 12, 2010 at Delaware Court.  She was born November 5, 1916 on a farm near Byhalia, the oldest daughter of Delmar and Vera (Madison) Reed.

She went to school by horse and buggy and after finishing the 8th grade at Byhalia High School, she spent her days helping on the farm.  She married Earthen Sewell on December 25, 1935 and they had six children.  Earthen died on September 30, 1962.  Surviving are their daughters, Mary Jane Phillians, Grove City; Linda Jackson, Clearwater, Florida; Nancy Wood, Delaware; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two sons, Calvin LeRoy and Robert Lee Sewell; a daughter, Marilyn Trout and two sisters, Wilda Moore and Lea Madison.

Thelma dedicated her life to caring for others.  During her years with Earthen, she cared for his parents and her own mother through various illnesses.  After Earthen’s death, she had a job with “Community Action” which was the early version of the Welfare Department.  She always had a special place in her heart for the elderly who were isolated, taking baked goods and other homemade items to them.  Throughout her life Thelma was an active member of the Union Baptist Church until declining health prevented her from going.

She spent her spare time making “grandma” quilts, doll clothes and embroidering pillowcases for her family.  In 1987 she reached her goal of making a quilt for every member of her family for Christmas.  Her children and grandchildren still treasure these quilts today.  Time with her grandchildren was very important to Thelma.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood with Pastor Tim Peria officiating.  Burial will follow in Byhalia Cemetery.  Friends may call on Monday from 6 to 8 PM.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association or the Central Ohio Diabetes Association.
