Lucile M. Carey

Lucile Mary (Lauer) Carey age 99 of Green Camp went to be with the Lord Early Monday morning June 8, 2009 at her home She was born March 13, 1910 at the family home in Norton to the late Herbert Adam and Cloa Melinda (Lehner) Lauer Lucile graduated from the Norton grade school. As a young girl, she would walk each day to school. Lucille’s parent’s home was about 1 mile west of Norton. She graduated from the Waldo High School. Going to high school in Waldo, which was about 3 miles away. At this time she would hitch up a horse to the buggy and drive it to school. On November 25, 1931 in Waldo she married Edwin J. Carey who passed away Sunday January 24, 1987. Lucile is survived by 2 sons: Richard W. (Betty) Carey of Green Camp, William R. (Phyllis) Carey of Green Camp, 1 daughter: Ruth Ann (Roger) Stoffer of Vero Beach, Fla. She will be dearly missed by her 13 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren and 6 Great Great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and an extended family. She was preceded in death by 1 son: Charles H. Carey, grandson Russell J. Carey, granddaughter: Jacquelyn E. Schwaderer, 2 brothers: Dr. Bernard R. Lauer of Waldo and Dr. Harold E. Lauer of Lima, Lucy was the last surviving and oldest child of her family Lucile is the Matriarch of the Carey family, having kept the Carey Farm home fires burning for five generations As a Young lady she belonged to the Waldo Lutheran Church, where her parents were longtime members, she was active in the Luther league. After her marriage to Edwin Carey, she moved in with Ed and her father-in-law Jacob Carey, at the home farm. Jacob was widowed when Edwin was just a small lad. Ed soon found Lucy a valuable helpmate in his early years developing the World Famous Carey White Leghorn egg laying strain. These Leghorns went on to win more egg laying contests than any other strain in the U.S.. Both Ed and Lucy spent years of dedicated countless hours building Carey Farms into one of the Largest Poultry Breeding farms in the U.S. Lucile was to become a significant partner in this business, late becoming Secretary when Carey Farms, Inc. and Carey Farms Land Co. were established in 1960. Lucile and Ed enjoyed travel to most all the poultry breeding farms in the 48 states. Later, Lucile was able to travel to the 2 other states as well as Ireland, Germany and Europe. She was Poultry Woman of the Year. A well rounded and highly respected lady, she was active in her community and was a founding member in 1933 of the Happy Homemakers Club, Methodist church serving as president of the United Methodist Women, delegate to Lakeside, Bible school teacher and Sunday School Teacher Her witness has been a testament of her strong Christian faith, to her family and many lives that have been touched by her spirit of giving, upon her marriage and moving in to her father in laws home, she and Ed, made his home her home providing him with loving care till his last days. Lucy and Ed were members of Mount Olive Methodist Church for many years. Later they were members of the Rush Creek (Essex) United Methodist Church, where she remained active until her death. Friends may call Thursday June 11, 2009 from 5-8 pm at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood, funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 am at the Rush Creek (Essex) United Methodist Church, Rev. She was quite a woman. She and my mother worked together for years preparing dinners at Green Camp School for all of us to serve to earn our trips to Washington. They were the same age but my mother has been gone since 1989. She was also a good friend to my Aunt Annabelle Converse and helped serve their golden anniversary party.
