Roberta Mae (Weist) Wood
Roberta Mae (Weist) Wood
Roberta Mae (Weist) Wood, was born Roberta Mae Tucker on July 9, 1923 in Putnam County, West Virginia to Brady and Kate Tucker. Roberta had an older brother Elbon and would have younger sisters Anna Jean and Rosalie and a younger brother Donald.

Her father found work in Ohio and moved the family to the LaRue-Agosta area.  Roberta grew up in the family home on LaRue DeCliff Road.  She enjoyed playing with all the Roux children and attended Agosta school.

After high school Roberta went to live at the home of Mildred and Mack Weist.  She helped  Mildred care for her children and home.  It was there she would meet her future husband, Mack’s first cousin, Charles Franklin Weist.  Roberta and Frank were married on April 17, 1943. They made their home on Frank’s fathers family homestead on the wildcat pike in LaRue where Frank was born.  Roberta helped Frank on the farm.  They owned and operated Weist Sand and Gravel while Frank also worked at the Marion Power Shovel.  On July 4, 1947 they celebrated the birth of their daughter Claudia Marie.  Needless to say she was the light of their life. Roberta and Frank shared many happy years together enjoying vacations in Canada and many other places.

In 1962 Roberta began working at the LaRue school as a cook.  She enjoyed seeing all the kids going through the lunch line each day.  Roberta and Frank were blessed by the marriage of their daughter Claudia to Dan Hicks.  Two loving Grandchildren Jennifer Lynn and Darren Paul came into the family.  Grandma and Grandpa loved taking them to Indian Lake where they would fish and ride in grandpa’s boat. Sadly on September 27, 1977 Frank passed away.  Roberta continued to work at the school until 1988.

On September 20, 1980 she married Edwin Wood.  They started their life together at Kiwanis Village. They shared 16 years of marriage and parted ways. Roberta stayed at the Village with her friends and enjoyed going out with the ‘Girls.”

Much to her delight on June 10,1989 came the marriage of her granddaughter Jennifer to Michael Thompson. From that union came two Great Grandchildren Matthew and Haleigh whom she dearly loved..

She was so proud that Darren was part of the LaRue Fire Department and all the times they helped many of the residents of the Village escape from the water, bed weather or just lend a hand to any of them or to the community.

Roberta was Past Chief of Pythian Sisters Zenith Temple # 144.  A member of Mary Lenox Chapter # 98 Order of the Eastern Star. And charter member of S.S.H. Club.

In February 2000 Roberta had open heart surgery at the Riverside Hospital.  She was never quite the same old “Bertie.”  The past seven years her health has declined along with her memory.  She has spent the last 18 months under the care of a devoted and loving staff at Marion Manor.  Sadly Roberta passed peacefully away Tuesday September 18, 2007 at 6:18 PM surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday September 22, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in LaRue.  Minister will be the Rev. David Lippert.  Burial in the LaRue Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home in LaRue from 4 to 7 PM on Friday.

Dear Bertie's Family,
I was so sorry to hear of her passing. She was a very special lady. When I taught at Elgin West, she was a bright spot in my daily routine. Please know all of you are in my daily thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Oehler
