Esther Marie Keller
MusicNotesEsther Marie Keller, 92, of Columbus, died Friday, August 21, 1998.
A 1923 graduate of Prospect High School, she received a bachelor of arts
degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and a master's degree in music education
from Northwestern University. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa,
Pi Kappa Lambda, Mu Phi Epsilon and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was supervisor of vocal music in the Cleveland Public Schools from
1949 until her retirement in 1971 and formerly had taught music in the Westlake
schools and at James Ford Rhodes High School in Cleveland. She was
the founder and director of the Cleveland All City High School Chorus from
1954 to 1971.
She was active as a member of the Fortnightly Music Club, Three Arts
Club, College Club West and the Lakewood United Methodist Church and
taught music study classes in Rocky River and Lakewood under the auspices
of the Women's Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra.
A resident of Wesley Glen, a Methodist retirement home in Columbus,
since 1982, she continued her musical interests by supporting the Columbus
Symphony. She joined the Women's Music Club of Columbus and King
Avenue United Methodist Church where she sang in the chancel choir and
served on several committees.
She was bom March 17,1906, in West Liberty to the late Rev. Wesley Martin
and Cara Ramey Keller and was predeceased by two brothers, Paul Keller
and Claire Keller.
She is survived by a brother, Charles W. Keller of Prospect; six nephews;
and 14 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends may caii at the Gehm-Ballinger Funeral Home in Prospect from 5
to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial services at Wesley Glen, 5155 N. High St.,
Columbus, and graveside services at the Prospect Cemetery will be held at a
later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the King Avenue United
Methodist Church or Wesley Glen Retirement Center in care of the funeral
home.
