Lester Smith, 78, formerly of Claibourne, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002,
at The Gables at Green Pastures after a long battle with cancer. He was a welder at Marion Power Shovel and a member of United Steel Workers Local 1949. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 40. He was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Skeetrock, Va., to the late Kendrick and Mary Moore Smith and was predeceased by three brothers. He married Margaret Wilson March 4, 1954, in Grundy, Va., and she survives at The Gables. He is also survived by a son, Gary (Correl) Smith of Centerburg; three daughters, Debra (Michael) Virden of Richwood, Leslie Dianna Mack of Marion and Ronda (Wade) Hisle of Claibourne; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fay Ratliff of Clintwood, Va., and Lois (A.L.) Mullens of Marion; and numerous nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood. The Rev. Harold Mullins will officiate and burial will be at the Maskill Cemetery where military services will be conducted by the Richwood VFW and American Legion. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or American legion Post 40. Cards will be available at the funeral home.
