Karleen A. Streitenberger died peacefully at home on January 1, 2003.
She was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, on April 23, 1928, the daughter of Floyd and Opal Streitenberger, who preceded her in death. Karleen was a 1949 graduate of Grant Hospital School of Nursing. She later earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati and a Master’s of Science in Nursing from the Ohio State University. Karleen spent her entire career with Grant Hospital and retired on February 26, 1996, after 45 years. She held a variety of nursing, teaching and administrative positions, including Director of the Grant Hospital School of Nursing, Grant’s Director of Nursing Services, Risk Manager, Clinical Instructor and Head Nurse. In addition to her many contributions to Grant, Miss Streitenberger also served in dozens of executive positions for the Ohio League for Nursing, the Ohio Nurses Association, the Ohio Hospital Association, and many other professional organizations. Karleen’s family includes her best friend, Peggy Swartz (Columbus); sister Betty Jane and Harold (Bud) Roberts (Chillicothe); nephew Larry Eugene Roberts (Diana), niece Victory A. Storts (Ray); niece Patsy J. Kessler (Jack); and a special cousin, Donna Jean Ebert. Karleen enjoyed life to the fullest, even through severe pain for many years. Her greatest gifts were the love, friendship, compassion, and loyalty she gave to thousands of nursing students and colleagues. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 24, at 10:00 AM at Grant Hospital, Columbus. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Grant/Riverside Methodist Hospitals Foundation at 3724-G, Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio 43214 in care of the Karleen A.
