Margaret Lake Boggs
Margaret Lake Boggs, 102, formerly of Sutton, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct.
21, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Union County.
She had been living since 1995 with her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and
Mrs. Charles W. Holcomb of Richwood. In December 2001 she moved to The
Gables at Green Pastures.
She was a graduate of Virginia College in Roanoke, Va., and attended
West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va. She was a member of Davis
Memorial Presbyterian Church is Gassaway, W.Va., an honorary member of
the Sutton Woman's Club, a past member of Judy's Garden Club and a
member of the Presbyterian Women's Fellowship. Prior to her marriage,
she taught domestic science in the high schools in Gassaway and Davis,
W.Va.
She was a forward-looking business woman in an era when few women were
accepted in managerial positions. Her long association with C.M.
Singleton and Company is well known and under her guidance and
management, the small business of the late 1920s expanded into one of
Sutton's most modern and thriving businesses. The store later held a
franchise with the Ben Franklin Company. She became a partner in the
business in 1959 and continued in its management until her retirement in
1964.
She was born June 25, 1901, in Republican City, Neb., to the late Otis
Kennedy and Nellie Brandt Lake of Lake Charles, La., and was predeceased
by two sons, Thornton Lake Boggs and Ralph Colbert Boggs Jr.; a
granddaughter, Margaret Boggs Hoover; three brothers; and her husband,
Ralph Colbert Boggs Sr. whom she married June 10, 1925.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Charles W.) Holcomb; seven
grandchildren, Martha Campa of Cortland, William G. Boggs of Sutton, Dr.
James W. (Judy) Holcomb of Flowery Branch, Ga., Ann Holcomb of New York,
N.Y., Timothy B. Holcomb of Noblesville, Ind., and Sally (Joseph) Wiley
and Mary (Michael) Price of Richwood; 10 great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Kenneth B. Lake Jr. of Lake
Charles, La., and Dr. Francis T. Lake of Gainesville, Ga.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Davis Memorial Church
in Gassaway. The Ballinger Funeral home in Richwood is in charge of
local arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church at 206 Birch St.,
Gassaway, WV 26624, or Richwood First United Methodist Church, 18 S.
Fulton St., Richwood, OH 43344.
