John W. Cheney
John W. Cheney, 67, of St. Charles, 111., formerly of the Richwood area, died Friday, Aug. 30, 1996, at his home following a six-year battle with cancer.
He was bom Nov. 4, 1928, in Richwood, to parents Sturgis and Gladys (Flesher) Cheney. While living in Richwood, Mr. Cheney worked at and then owned the former Cheney Insurance Agency. He was active in the community serving as a former Claibourne Township trustee, and Union County Vice Chairman of the Republican party. He also started the Richwood Athletic Club which later became the Hunt Milling Softball Team.
In 1968, he moved to St. Charles, 111., where he worked as a sales representative for the Batesville Casket Co. for more than 26 years before retiring. His favorite pastime was playing golf.
On Sept. 4,1949, in Richwood, he married the former Emma Shields. She survives along with three sons, Cort (Susan) Cheney of Lafayette, III, Clark (Cathy) Cheney of St. Charles, 111., and Calvin (Joyce) Cheney of Morton, III; seven grandchildren, Grant, Garrett, John, Scott, Brian, Kyle and Luke; two brothers, Gene (Isabell) Cheney of Upper Sandusky, and Robert (Melva) Cheney ofRichwood; two sisters, Phyllis Oman and Sara (Tom) Shields, all of Richwood. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Cheney.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3,1996, at First United Methodist Church in Richwood. Calling hours will be held 3-8 p.m. Monday at Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood. Burial will be in Claibourne Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 18 S. Fulton St., Richwood, 43344, or the American Cancer Society, 7 Stocks-dale Dr., Marysville, 43040.
