Martha L. Carter Hicks
Martha L. Carter Hicks, 82, of Richwood, a devoted mother and grand-mother, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Memorial Hospital of Union County.
She worked for the North Union school district for 13 years and did house-keeping in and around Richwood for many years. She enjoyed going to garage sales and was known as "the Garage Sale Queen." She was baptized at and formerly attended the former black Baptist Church that was founded in Richwood in the early 1900s on East Ottawa Street. Her home was the home base for African Americans coming back to Richwood to keep in touch with local activities because she had a keen knowledge of local events and family in the area. She and her husband were strong supporters of North Union sports and she was an avid reader of newspapers.
She was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Richwood in the home she currently lived in to the late Herbert C. and Eva Jane Moore Carter and was predeceased by four brothers, Donald, George, Robert and Roy Carter; and a sister, Dorothy Carter-Robinson. She married Bert Garland Hicks in October of 1942 and he died April 26, 1991.
She is survived by two sons, Garland Hicks and Tom (Trish) Hicks of Overland Park, Kan.; three daughters, Phyllis Gaskins of Marysville and Beverly (Donald) Barnes and Debra Jerew of Richwood; grandchildren, Irvine Gaskins, Danny (Tina) Barnes, Dennis Barnes, Todd (Teri) Barnes, Tony Hicks, Taylor Jerew, Zachary Burts, Shaun Hicks, Tyrone Hicks, Andre Hicks, Leslie Gaskins-Bowden and Lisa (Kent) Gaskins; great-grandchildren, Kent Bowden, Christopher Gaskins, Kelley Gaskins, Klarisa Gaskins, Kimberly Gaskins and Brittnay Bowden; a sister, Thelma Carter-Lowery of Westerville; and dear friends, Jim and Ted Harrison and Jackie O'Harris.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood and burial will be at the Claibourne Cemetery. Friends
