Russell L. Roberts
FlagRussell L. Roberts, 82, of Richwood died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at his home.
He was a retired farmer and a lifelong resident of Union County. He was a
U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 79th Infantry Division
where he rose to the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded two Purple
Hearts with Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a 1936 graduate of Richwood High
School and a member of the Richwood First United Methodist Church, Union
County Farm Bureau, VFW Post 870 and American legion Baccarat Post 40. He
was also a member of Elks Lodge 1130 in Marysville and the former Richwood
Lions Club and had served on the Richwood School Board and as a Claibourne
Township Trustee. He was an original member of the Richwood Gold League and
the Sweet Sixteen golf group.
He was born Aug. 10, 1918, in Radnor to the late Jesse L. and Maude Kyle
Roberts and was predeceased by a son, Michael J. Roberts and a sister, Ruth
Sprague.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Detwiler Roberts whom he married May 2,
1942, in Hillsboro; children, Connie (William) Cowgill of North Baltimore,
Dennis (Judi) Roberts of Plain City and Jody (Nick) Wall of Marion; 11
grandchildren, Tiffany Wood, Tracy Stover, Robyn Overly, Brynne Dieterle,
Jason Cowgill, Cassandra VanHorn, Dan Campbell, Jesse Wall, Bart Wall and
Kacy Kirby; and eight great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held Wednesday at the Claibourne
Cemetery, with the Rev. Joseph Rhea officiating. The Richwood VFW and
American Legion Post will conduct veterans services. Friends may call from
5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Richwood First United Methodist
Church, 18 S. Fulton St., Richwood, Ohio 43344
