Dwight L. Wenig
Dwight L. Wenig
LARUE — Dwight L. Wenig, father of seven, businessman, and farmer, died of cirrhosis of the liver at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14,2003, at home surrounded by his family. He was 71.
Dwight lived with his wife, Mildred (Bader), on their 200-acre farm  in  Grand
Township.      He raised dairy cattle and farmed for some 20 years be-fore launching in 1969      Wenig's     WENIG Heating & Cooling, a family-owned and operated business, in Marion that would become very successful under   the   partnership   he formed with his five sons.
Dwight graduated as valedictorian in 1950 from Meeker High School, where he was active in the Future Farmers of America. He. earned Star State Fanner and American Farmer degrees along with a national ybuth award for outstanding achievements and leadership. One of two students to earn the award, he was honored on national radio and received a medal-of-honor and full scholarship to Syracuse University in New York.
Upon graduating from Meeker, Dwight married and began raising a family in western Marion County. Mr. and Mrs. Wenig renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary Aug. 10, 2002.
Among his hobbies were woodworking and preserving history. Dwight restored and extensively remodeled their sesquicentennial farmhouse. He also designed and constructed a vacation home at Candle-wood Lake in Galion, using hand-hewn red oak from their ♦ farm. While at one time the hallmark orange tractors provided his livelihood, Allis-Chalmers eventually became a hobby
after Dwight retired from farm-
ing. He developed a substantial
j antique collection, which he en-
joyed restoring with his grand-
I son, Steven Mattix.
Dwight worked until poor health prohibited it. Even then he enjoyed visiting the office regularly to see his sons and granddaughter, Michelle Wol-lott, who took over as office manager. His serious health problems began in 1996 with a pericardiectomy that he successfully underwent. A couple
j years later he was diagnosed
/ with cirrhosis of the liver—the cause of which was never determined. He suffered from related complications, including nearly fatal esophageal vericies. He was especially grateful to be able to finish in his final years an extensive
j family genealogy.
Dwight was cared for at
home and is survived by his wife, Mildred, along with five sons and two daughters, Bertha Mattix (David) of New Bloom-ington- Clif (Tonya), James (Teri), and Doug Wenig (Susan) of LaRue; Gary Wenig (Minerva) of Dublin; Bryan Wenig (Donyell) of Marion; and Jeanette Drake (Jeff) of Find-lay. He is survived by 17 grand children and three great-grand children. Also surviving are his three brothers, Henry (Nancy) of Carroll, George (Marcia) of Mooresville, N.G., and Ralph (Roseanna) Wenig of New Bloomington.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Stofcheck Funeral Home in LaRue. The Rev. Donald Riker will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Meeker United Methodist Church, where Dwight has been a lifelong member. Burial will follow in Frame Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
