George E. Orahood
George E. Orahood, 79, of Prospect died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the Sunbridge Nursing Center in Marion following an extended illness.
He graduated from Ostrander High School in May of 1943 and was drafted into the Army in June of that year. He served as a tank commander in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II and ended his career as a chaplain's assistant, serving until February 1946. He worked for ODOT on a survey crew and was trained by Lawrence Fleming, his wife's father. He left ODOT to work as a surveyor at the Union County Engineer's Office, then worked for D&B Builders in Marysville, working at that time on National Homes. In 1955 he joined Floyd G. Browne LLC, a company that put in sewage and water treatment plants, as a surveyor and traveled all over Ohio for 33 years.
He had a hobby of bulding and designing homes and three of his remodeled kitchens were featured in a farm magazine. Upon retiring in 1989, he developed an avid interest in wildflowers and did research for the Texas Wildflower Farms. He enjoyed history and was always eager to share his experiences of collecting artifacts and discovering an Indian village on the Ohio River while working with Floyd G. Browne.
He shared experiences of World War II, finding the Indian village and how to grow wildflowers with his wife's elementary school class at Elgin South and expanded the program to other schools.
He loved children and traveled to Camp Ohio for 14 years with Elgin South fourth and fifth graders. After open heart surgery in 1990, he joined Elgin South's Jump Rope for Heart to promote heart research, carrying his teddy bear.
His last volunteer job was greeting everyone at the Prospect United Methodist Church where he was an active and dedicated member for more than 50 years. He did this job faithfully for many years and his last opportunity was Dec. 7.
He was bom May 5, 1924, in Ostrander to the late Ray and Esther Spees Orahood.
He is survived by his wife, Anne P. Fleming Orahood whom he married Sept. 20, 1947; a son, Mike (Cathi) Orahood of Prospect; two grandchildren,'David Orahood of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Kathleen Konstantelos of Chicago; four step-grandchildren, Anita Rehberg of Woodstock, 111., Keith Johnson of Ostrander and Jodi Pereira and Kim-berly Gaines of West Palm Beach, P.a.; and six step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Hoffman will officiate and burial will be at the Prospect Cemetery where veteran graveside services will be conducted by the Marion County United Veterans Council. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood.
Pallbearers will be Barry and Larry Orahood, John Varhouse, Keith Johnson, Gary Kellogg, Tony Dunbar, Tracy Morgan, and Lacy Blankenship. Honarary pallbearers will be Tim Barnes and Phil Cunningham. Memorial contributions may be made to (tie trustee fund of the church or the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio. Cards will be available at. the funeral home.
