His family moved to Richwood when he was 2 years old and settled on a
farm. In 1938, he was in the last class to graduate from 11th grade at
the Essex school and he then graduated from the 12th grade in Richwood
in 1939. He farmed until he entered the Marine Corps in Quantico, Va.,
from March 1945 to the end of 1946.
He served on the early Richwood Volunteer Fire Department and was a
deputy sheriff for former sheriff Ed Amrine. He had a small plane in the

Mansfield, American Legion Baccarat Post 40 in Richwood and the Richwood

Fern Monson's resort on Lake Kabetogama, Minn., and their 13 seasons in
Bonita Springs, Fla., near Mary's sister. In spite of being diagnosed
with dementia in January 1999, he never lost his sweet disposition.
He was born May 25, 1920, in Portsmouth to the late Henry Harrison and

He is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret Price Collins whom he married
Feb. 14, 1943; a brother, Paul (Betty) Collins of Ogden, Utah; two
sisters, Madlyn Sawyer of Marion and Ruth Chipman of Manhattan, N.Y.;
and many loving and caring nieces and nephews, including Gary Collins
and his wife Nancy who have been there helping them in every way the
past four years.
