John Willard (Jack) Knaur
Flag MARION - - John Willard (Jack) Knaur, age 82, of 1005 Richwood-LaRue Road, LaRue, died Thursday, Dec, 14, 2006, at 3:43 p.m. at Marion General Hospital.
He was born Dec. 17,1923, in Dallas, Texas, to the late George C. and Dorothy (Griffin) Knaur. He was raised in Dennison, Texas. On July 24. 1945, he married Margaret (Mardi) Lingo and she died in September 1974. He married Carol (Finley) Barber on April 7, 1984, and she surives.
Also surviving are children Don (Karen) Knaur of Fostoria, Christine (David) Hill of Fort Pierce, Fla.; Grandchildren Jonathan and Rebecca Knaur and Sarah (Matthew) Burgess; great-grandchildren Ariel and Jori Boles; stepchildren Randal Barber of Columbus, the Rev. Terry C. (Mary Ann) Barber of Rio Rico, Ariz., and Debra (Herb) Burton of Orlando, Fla.; step-grandchildren, James (Jessi) Barber, Bethany Barber, Jennifer Burton and Patrick Burton; and a sister, Judith Davidson of Broken Arrow, Okla.
He was preceded, in death by his daughter, Gretchen Knaur, in 1967.
He graduated from Phillips Academy of Andover, Mass., class of 1940, graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, class of 1945, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Delta Theta fraternities.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 409th Bomber Squadron of the Ninth Army Air Corps as a pilot of an A26 twin engine bomber in France. Discharged as a 1st Lieutenant
in October 1945.
Moved to LaRue in 1947 and was involved in the operations of the LaRue Tile Co., The E.H., Lingo Co. and the Lingo Oil Co. Prior to his retirement, he served as president of all three companies. Served as director of the Mt. Victory' State Bank for over 30 years.
Served as local correspondent for the Marion Star and the Kenton Times for local news and sports. Was appointed Director of Civil Defense for LaRue in 1966. Longtime active member of the LaRue United Methodist Church serving in many positions including Sunday School superintendent and lay speaker.
Seventeen-year volunteer with Cub Scout Pack 36. Several year member of the LaRue Community Band. LaRue volunteer fireman serving as assistant fire chief for over 30 years. Volunteered with Horizon inter-faith prison ministries, NOMADS United Methodist Church Mission Ministry, American Red Cross Disaster Relief, Lay Witness Missions, mission work in Africa and Haiti, member of the Alleluia Gang. And also volunteered with the reading program at Elgin West.
Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19,2006, at 7 p.m. at the LaRue United Methodist Church. This service will be a celebration of Life. (Mr. Knaur has donated his body to medical science.) Minister for the service will be the Rev. Edward W. Fu-gate. The family will receive friends one hour before service time at the church.
Those who wish may make contribution to the LaRue United Methodist Church.
