Robert E. Howald Sr.
Flag Robert E. Howald Sr., 79, of Richwood, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at
Marion General Hospital.
A 1945 graduate of Richwood High School, he was a World War II Navy
veteran, serving with the Sea Bees.
He had worked various places throughout his life; he farmed, worked at
O.M. Scotts Co., owned and operated the former Rainbow Cleaners in
Richwood, worked at the former Marblecast plant in Richwood, helped as
janitor at First United Methodist Church, drove a school bus for
Richwood Schools, was a driver for Bill Rose Ford, and had worked
carpentry with John Rider.
He was very active in the Richwood community, an active and dedicated
member of Richwood First United Methodist Church where he served in many
capacities through the years, was a Richwood Village Councilman and
former Mayor, former member of the Richwood Civic Center, current Men's
Breakfast Board member, was a former volunteer fireman, and a member of
the former Richwood Lions Club.
Although he was very active with his community and church, the joy of
his life was his loving family.
He was born April 27, 1927, in Marion, to the late Ralph J. and Dorothy
Mabel Mayes Howald. He also was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy M.
Chapman, and a sister-in-law, Mary Howald.
He is survived by his wife, Natalia Potts Howald, to whom he was married
Oct. 10, 1948, in Elida; their children, Robert E. (Carolyn) Howald Jr.
and Joseph L. (Kathy) Howald of Richwood, Elizabeth A. Luera of
Porterville, Calif., and Jane E. (Joe) Bialecki of West Mansfield;
grandchildren, James, Lance and Josh Howald, Troy (Erin) Chapman, Tracy
Mannasmith, Philip (Becky) Howald, Joe (Dawn) Howald, Kileen (Doug)
Payne, Tim (Heather) Bialecki, William Bialecki, Marcos Lozano, Melanie
Canales, Jessica (Jeff) Osborne, Andrea Chapman, Ryan Chapman and Ashley
LeVan; 25 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Kevin (Shauna) Chapman of
Richwood; and brothers, Ralph Howald Jr. of Delaware, and Paul (Charlou)
Howald of Lewis Center.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stofcheck Funeral
Home, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will
be at Claibourne Cemetery where graveside services will be conducted by
the Richwood Veterans. The minister will be Joseph Rhea.
Memorial donations may be made to the North Union District Veterans
Memorial and/or Richwood First United Methodist Church.
