Benjamin Rodgers "Ben" Sager
LARUE — Benjamin Rodgers "Ben" Sager, age 92 of LaRue. Ohio, passed away at 11:03 p.m., Thursday, May 11, 2006.
He was born on Sager Road in LaRue on Sept. 10,1913, to the late William Earl and Mabel (Rodgers) Sager.
Ben was married to Mary Elizabeth Hoffman on Oct. 27, 1935. She preceded him in death on May 2,1976. He then married Maureen (Mickie) Patterson on Nov. 13,1979, and she survives.
Ben was the father of five children, Diane Rosalie Aschenbach of Fremont, Ohio, Daniel Rodgers of San Francisco, Calif., Samuel B. (Donna) of Zephyrhills, Fla., William Roy (Debbie) and Michael Shane (Mary), both of LaRue. He has 11 grandchildren, Natalie (Aschenbach) Danhoff, Melissa (As-chenoach) Carpenter, David Sager Aschenbach, Benjamin Brent Sager (deceased), Samuel B. Sager (deceased), Cassandra (Sager) Webb, Vanessa (Sager) Gannon, William Brad Sager, Douglas Ryan Sager, Kara Sager) Root, Shane Benjamin Charles, Jessica Ann, and Lucas Alden Sager. He also has four stepgrandchildren, Brenda Lynn Fee, Dora Ann Stephens, John W. Harding and Deborah Lee Malec. He is survived by 17 great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchiidren. He is also survived by three sisters in Arizona, Ruth Deal, Mary (Gene) Kuhlwein, Margaret Ann Banning; and one brother, Paul William (Betty) Sager of LaRue. A sister, Mildred, and son-in-law, David F. Aschenbach, preceded, him in death.
Ben was a lifetime resident and farmer of Bowling Green Township. He graduated in 1932 from LaRue High School as president of his senior class. He played football and was a member of the Marion County Ohio FFA Band. Along with 80-plus years of livestock and grain farming, Ben also drove a school bus for LaRue Public School at the age of 15, raised and trained Airedale terriers for the Oorang Kennels, was an avid fur trapper, and baled thousands of bales of hay and straw. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, pitching horseshoes, playing euchre, golfing in his later years and spending winters in Florida,
Originally a member of the Richwood Lions Club, he was an active and charter member of 56 years of the LaRue Lions Club. Member of the LaRue United Methodist Church, the LaRue Lodge 463 F, & A.M. Mary Lenox Chapter 98 OES, Marion County Fair Board, LaRue School Board, AWMAO Wine Club, and various card clubs.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, David Aschenbach, Brad, Doug, Shane and Lucas Sager, Dave Danhoff, Todd Carpenter, and Nethan Root. Honorary pallbearer is Mark Webb.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 15,2006, at 11 a.m. at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in LaRue. Minister will be the Rev. Edward W. Fugate. Burial in the LaRue Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home in LaRue on Sunday, May 14, 2006, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Those who wish may make contributions to either the LaRue Lions Club or the "Benjamin Sager Agricultural Scholarship Fund," 181 S. Chestnut St. LaRue, OH 43332.
