Jerry Gene DeWitt
Jerry Gene DeWittBeachJerry Gene DeWitt, age 85, of Green Camp passed away peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2024 at home, following a brave battle with cancer and heart disease.

Jerry was born on August 25, 1938 in York Center to James W. DeWitt and Edna (Rockhold) DeWitt Fausnaugh.  He was a 1956 graduate of Byhalia York High School.  On August 12, 1960 in York Center he married Ellen (Erwin) DeWitt and together they shared over 63 years of marriage.

Jerry was a loving husband and proud father of four sons and two grandsons.  He was self-employed as a Pepsi Cola distributor and retired from Lowes Home Improvement.  He served in the US Army Reserves.  He was one of the founding owners of Berwick Pizza from 1974-1992 and made many lifelong friendships with the employees and customers there.

He was well known in the Village of Green Camp and actively served his community in many ways, including working as the Green Camp Village Clerk, performing village maintenance and was a member of the Green Camp Township Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, including serving as Assistant Fire Chief.  Jerry was a friend and mentor to many youth of the Village of Green Camp.

Jerry enjoyed the 8 winters he and Ellen spent at Vista Del Lago park in Bradenton, Florida and the many friendships made there while playing cards, shuffleboard, and walking the park.  He loved the sunny, blue skies and warm temperatures of Florida.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Ellen DeWitt; three sons:  Kent (Brenda) DeWitt of Richwood, Kyle (Gina) DeWitt of Green Camp, and Kirk DeWitt of Green Camp; one grandson: Dylan DeWitt; three brothers:  Tom DeWitt, Dan DeWitt, and Richard (Dick) DeWitt; one sister:  Judy Durham; brother-in-law: Nelson Erwin Sr.; daughter in law: Jodi Bertke (Adam Bertke) and Marie Lahmer along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by son: Keith DeWitt; grandson: Joshua DeWitt; and two sisters: Janet Miller and Barbara Ritchie.

Jerry selflessly donated his body to the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Division of Anatomy Body Donation Program.  His generous gift will play a vital part in the training of future medical practitioners.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Tranquility Hospice, who became like family over the past six months.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday January 6, 2024 at 12 noon at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood.  Pastors Carl Redding and Tim Pasma will officiate. Friends may call two hours prior to the service beginning at 10 am at the funeral home in Richwood.

Family and friends are invited to the Green Camp Community Center, located at 200 Main St, Green Camp, immediately following the service to share in fellowship and memories of Jerry’s life.

Memorial contributions can be made to Tranquility Hospice: 1949 State Route 37 W, Suite C, Delaware, Ohio 43015 or the Elgin Music Boosters, 1150 Keener Rd. S, Marion, Ohio 43302.

Ellen, since Gina married Kyle 24 years ago you and Jerry have been a part of our family. We’ve spent holidays and vacations all of us together and they have been a joy. We have shared a very special grandson, Dylan, who loves us all but he and Papa Jerry have always had a  little extra something between them.       Jerry has always been a “good” man and still is up in heaven. I can see him keeping things lively with the angels. Probably causing a few halos to tilt from laughter because of his sense of humor.         We have you and the whole family in our prayers. We know your hearts are broken. 💔           We miss him too.              Love, Thots and Prayers.  Judy & Russ

To Ellen & family, and Jerry's countless friendsand loved ones ... I haven't words to express feelings over this loss .. I doubt any of us do, other than to say that Jerry possessed every quality in life that makes a man a true man in every sense. Jerry is my friend, as many of the rest of the family are. I'll miss this man beyond what I can convey. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers for each and every one of you. Blessings as we all start the healing process ... That will take some time.
