Doris Ann Barkus
Doris Ann BarkusYellowRoseDoris Ann Barkus, 77, formerly of Mansfield, died Sunday, December 11, 2016 at Kindred Care Nursing Facility, Marion with her sister, brother-in-law, daughter and granddaughter at her side. She had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in August.

Doris was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Hubert I. Caldwell (Edith Parker) on June 24, 1939 in Ashland, Kentucky. She attended and graduated from Central High School in Columbus. She is survived by her only sibling, her sister Alice Faye (George) Nickoloff of Johnstown.

Doris was a hard worker and one of her proudest accomplishments was becoming certified and running her in-home day care all while caring for her grandchildren and keeping an immaculate home. She loved to dance, watch scary movies, took karate lessons, bowling, fresh water fishing, baking cookies and decorating them with her children. She also raised Siamese cats, and later, tropical fish. She loved her little dog Eddie. Her dream was to travel to Alaska.

As a young woman, she was married to Robert Heffley and had four children whom she is survived by, twin daughters, Debra K. (John) Orlando, Grove City; Mari L. (Gregory) Derouaux, Richwood; Robert S. (Joannie) Urbanik, Alexandria; Kenneth A Urbanik, Mansfield. She later married Theodore Urbanik in Chicago, Illinois and had two sons, Theodore “Ike” (Heather) Urbanik, Mission Viejo, California and Benjamin N. Urbanik, Knox County. She was later married to George Barkus, whom she met in Mansfield. He was a loving and doting companion.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Melissa (Keith) Marcum, Mindy (George) Tsiopras , Jason Derouaux, Tony (Kershauna) Urbanik, Keith (Kate) Urbanik, Ellie Urbanik, Ethan Urbanik; great-grandchildren, Nathan Marcum, Malina Marcum, Dominic Urbanik, Isabella Tsiopras, George Tsiopras, Nikki (Thompson-Urbanik), Zaden Urbanik; nieces, Annette Derouaux, Anna Smith, Amara (Kevin, U.S. Army) Camarata and their children who flew all the way from Germany to visit her; great-nephews; Ryan, Jerod (Alyssa), Tyler, Cole, Chace, Caden; great-nieces, Jenna, Kendall, Camryn; and great-great-nephew, Ian.

She was predeceased by her parents, many aunts and uncles, cousins, her husband George Barkus (2006) and a grandson, David A. Orlando (2009), U.S. Army, who is greatly missed.

Doris’s care givers and friends from Kindred said she was a “wonderful and ornery Lady”. This is supported by the fact that she survived months longer than expected.

The arrangements for Doris are as follows: Her cremation is arranged and lovingly handled by Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood. Because most of her family are located around the Columbus area, her memorial service with reception will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway, Grove City with Pastor Ted Alspach officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to the family to help with final expenses, in care of Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, OH 43123.

Thank you to Kindred Hospice nurses, aides and pastor, the compassionate caregivers and staff at Kindred Care Center and the residents for loving Doris. Nellie, her aide that cared for her many years in Doris’s home. Father Thomas Buffer of Marion St Mary's for his blessings and prayers. And for the love and support of family and friends.

I'm so thankful that I got to meet Ms. Doris and her daughter in August when I first started transporting her to her appointments. I'm so sorry for your loss. She was a great lady and I enjoyed going into see her and check on her when I would be at Kindered. She was an amazing woman and she will be missed greatly. I will miss going in to see her at Kindered. The whole family is in my thoughts and prayers.
